Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm sure you guys are sick of these types of threads but any info & advice you can offer would be much appreciated!

I'm going to buy my first road bike in the near future & have been looking online at bike reviews on different sites.

I want to get a decent entry level road bike as I intend on using it quite alot.

I've narrowed my search down to two bikes which appear to have good reviews & decent spec parts.

They are the Boardman Team Carbon & Canyon Roadlite 7.0.

I'm leaning towards the Boardman due to its Carbon frame & also the fact that I can buy it locally in Halfords.

Can any of you more knowledgable cyclists offer advice on which bike to go for?

    Thanks in advance!

Some people reported delays and hassle ordering from Canyon last year, but that may be a thing of the past.

The Boardman has a compact chainset (50/34), which is possibly more appropriate for a first road bike than the standard (53/39) on the Canyon if you intend to go up big hills.

Canyon has Shimano Ultegra, Boardman has SRAM Rival. These are compatible but use a different style of shifting, both good.

The Canyon is likely to have a harsher ride, but is a more desirable brand and looks better (IMO).

You can't really go wrong with the Boardman provided that it's built properly.

The Canyon is an internet order, but I wouldn't take a bike to Halfords for servicing, so in that respect the bikes are similar ownership propositions.

If you want a proper fast race bike and enjoy watching pro tour riders on something with the same logo, maybe go for the Canyon.

If you want something fast but comfy for sportives and general fitness riding (but that would fine for racing), maybe get the Boardman.

dont want to hijack the thread but Lumen would you pick a planet x road bike over the two bikes mentioned?

No, but only because I find the head tube ugly and prefer a more horizontal top tube.

Bike choosing is subjective - whatever butters your muffin.

I'm about to buy the Boardman Team Carbon under the bike to work scheme.
As an AXA customer can I still use the 15% discount voucher which they offer in Halfords while also buying the bike under the bike to work scheme??

The Boardman is a lovely bike, enjoy it. As a PX owner I think the bike is very good and its looks grow on you, but I'm sure I'd be a happy Boardman owner too if I'd chosen it, although I'd have gone for a Pro Carbon.
