    Hi all,

How could i calculate the amount of topsoil i might need to cover an area?

The garden in question is probably .25 of an acre

    Thanks

    .25 acre = approx 2000 sq yards

    Soil 9" deep = 4 x 9" to one cubic yard (36" x 36" x36")

    2000 divided by 4 = 500

so you will need at least 500 cubic yards

Dont know how heavy a cubic yard of soil is....depends how dry

You wont have 9" deep soil when it has settled maybe only half that amount.

    fodda,

thanks for that. it sounds like a lot, any guess at how many trailer loads i might be talking about or more importantly your guess at much this might cost??

Lets say at a guess that 1 cubic yard was .5 tons so you would need 250 tons around 13 x 20 ton lorry loads but like i say it is a guess as if you buy the soil after a wet spell you will be getting less soil.

Your .25 acres will have to measure around 40 yards by 50 yards or the equivelent for this amount

    hi mendel.

Just order your topsoil by the load. I.E. when you have the first load spread, then order the second.
Or just search 'topsoil calculator' on the internet.
    Where are you based?
