yeah, so they have the 1 bus, how many do they want? Everybody knows pensioners never miss busses, they're always there 45mins before the thing departs

And if they forget their incontinence pads on their first trip, do you expect them to wait till the next day?

Take it case by case with everyone. Blanket bans are used by lazy muppets.

This causes other motorists to take risks Leading to THEM having the accidents. :(

Anyone who takes stupid risks, for whatever reason, is the cause of the accident.

No matter what's on the road, you don't overtake it on a white line or a bend.....no matter how slow it's going.

If we followed the above argument, we'd ban cyclists!

Anyone that has elderly relatives in the countryside know that without their cars, they'll have extremely limited human contact. Heck, my grandad likes going to mass, which is a 30 minute drive down the road.

So I'd say this is bullsh|t.

Concrete is a construction material composed of cement (commonly Portland cement) and other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate (generally a coarse aggregate made of gravels or crushed rocks such as limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand), water, and chemical admixtures.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is set to announce a blanket ban on anybody over the age of 75 driving a vehicle on a public road. Its their latest attempt to cut down on the amount of raod accidents claiming that members of this age bracket are responsible for a high proportion of road deaths.

seems a little harsh to me in fairness

I think this is pretty disgraceful. What are people over the age of 75 supposed to do in rural areas if they have no access to transport and there is no local shops?

A much smarter solution is to make every person over the age of say 65-70 resit their driving exam, that way those who still are decent drivers can drive, those who aren't up to it just wont be able to drive then.

    according to the RSA

40% of all road deaths in ireland were aged 25 or younger. which means that 60% were caused by the over-25s.

so we should ban the over 25s from driving, since that will save the greater proportion of people.

Also added to the fact that younger drivers tend to drive more than older (as in retirement age and upwards) and it appears that...per mile driven, it is OLDER drivers who die more frequently on Irish roads.

Statistics can be used to prove any agenda really.

I was in the NCT centre on friday and ther was this crone in the queue in front of me..she was certainly in her 80's and bent double, shuffling along and barely able to speak.
I assumed she was in the care of this bloke who was there with her til i saw her handing in an nct test form herself!
I have every respect and sympathy for the elderly but this woman was barely alive..how she could be expected to drive a vehicle safely when she was clearly not in possesion of her full faculties is quite worrying.

You say that "statistics can be used to prove any agenda" and you have just proved that point, or at least you would have, only your interpretation of the RSA statistics, leave a lot to be desired.

Firstly, if 40% of road death victims were under 25, then 60% of road death victims were over 25. This does not mean that "60% were caused by the over-25s" as there are no figures to indicate which age demographic actually caused the deaths.

Secondly, there are no figures to indicate how many people from each age bracket are actually using the roads, so the figures are only a breakdown of deaths by percentage.

For example, if there are 2 million over 25 drivers & 1 million under 25 drivers on the road, and 100 people are killed with 40% of deaths from the under 25s & 60% from the over 25s, then the proportion of deaths is actually higher for under the 25s.

Thirdly, you state that it is a 'fact' that "younger drivers tend to drive more than older (as in retirement age and upwards) and it appears that...per mile driven, it is OLDER drivers who die more frequently on Irish roads."

This however, is not a fact. It is something that you plucked from the air to make a point & whilst it may well be true, you have nothing to back it up with & seem for whatever reason, to be skewing statistics & making sh*t up just to suit your own agenda. Whatever that may be.

true that. But, as FlutterinBantam so eloquently put it, 'the stats prove it buddy'...and the stats are that it is not the under 25s who are dying in crashes, at least by comparison to over 25s.

and while i acknowledge that it is only my opinion that older drivers drive less, logic dictates that the older person of retirement age, will not need to drive as much, since they will not be driving to work or college. There will obviously be the older people who drive around for fun or sightseeing with their other halves or whatever, but to argue that the elderly (which is whom this blanket ban is proposing to ban) account for even close to the same mileage as under-25s would just be silly.

The same man (75 +) backed into my car twice in the last 2 weeks! first time was in a supermarket car park, he was trying to reverse park into a parking space that didn't exist, it was just a small gap in front of my car and the car beside me, he had no spacial awareness and backed right into my car while I was sitting in it. The second time he was ahead of me at a junction and started to roll backwards, I beeped my horn but he continued to roll back and again hit my car. Thankfully there was no damage either time as he was going slow.
I don't think 75+ should be banned but I do think there should be regular driving tests (such as every 2/3 years) for the over 70's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,001 ✭✭✭recylingbin

Find out how many people in the country have a car.
Then allocate one road to each person on a particular day for however long it took for everyone to have a drive. Rinse and repeat.
If you were caught on the road you weren't supposed to be on on your allocated day, ban for life.
If you were caught driving on a day that wasn't your day, beheading.

    Simples.

    Or, ban roads.

As I pointed out, this is not actually the case. Whilst only 40% of the deaths were from the under 25s, this doesn't take into account the percentage of deaths in proportion to the number of road users in each age bracket, so to say that this statistic proves anything, other than a breakdown of the number of deaths by percentage, has no real basis.

There has been no announcement from the RSA about this today, as promised by the OP. Its obvious now that he has been tango'ed.

I am a bit disappointed to be honest. I was really looking forward to the RSA taking on the over 75s. The one age group most likely to fight a decision like this. If it was brought old biddys would be camped outside Gay Byrnes house until the decision was reversed.
