Split out to a new thread of its own.

.223 seems to be the big favourite for foxes these days, but I'll leave the detailed discussion to the fox specialists.

.222 ammo availability is not great and not great selection.

.223 Ammo from €10-€30 a box 20 rounds Vast availability and vast amount of variations in ammo.

.22-250 classed as Deer Hunting Rifle at the moment, Therefore Licencing issues & Expensive ammo and limited availability as a result.

CZ or Remington offer the Cheapest Starting Rifles. ~€500-750
Barrels have different twists, but there is ammo to suit both twist rates.

.223 Capable of sub 1" ,5 shot group @200 yards

triple two is a lovely calibre i had one years ago and loved it , it can be hard to get ammunition for it in the republic
223 is a good calibre for foxes but noisy if your used to a mag you'll be shocked , lots of ammunition available for it from the cheap to the rediculous

I'll add .204 Ruger or .220 Swift and you can pick up .17 REM for small money now :)

I recommend .204 Ruger if you want a good fox gun

    how dose that sound????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭bunny shooter

Ditch that scope, no experience with Howa rifles, calibre will do what you want ;)

Howa are according to fergal White a brilliant design if you want to work on them in the future.

The scope will limit your potential though. You would want to spend at least €500 on a scope, otherwise you will never get the best out of the Rifle IMHO.

Especially if you want good light gathering ability for a fox. 50mm objective lens min IMHO.
A lot of good x-Celtic tiger scopes in circulation.

look around! or ask the dealer for a better scope. He will have loads in the shop on other rifles. Try and strike a better deal.

    Rifle has great reports!

Some gundealers are running a deal where by you can get a Howa/Savage rifle, Swift scope, gun slip, mounts & rings all for €650.

Not 100% on the details or the calibers available under the deal, but a bloody good offer i think. Especially for newbies.

At the risk of taking the thread even further Off Topic...

Okay Rovi anymore of that nonsense and i'll report you to yourself, for cruelty to human kind. :D

To try and get back on topic here is my few choices, all of which are in .223 simply because i think it to be the most versatile and all rounder type of round/gun.

    A) Tikka T3 Varmint -

    B) CZ 527 - Kevlar -

    C) Remington 700 -

Although I have a .22wmr at the moment my ideal scenario (when the finances allow it) is to keep that for the bunnies and get a Tikka T3 in .223 for charlie.

I've been out a good few times lamping with a buddy who swears by his .223. I've seen him knock foxes on the spot from some IMO fantastic distances (about 150-180yds on a couple of occasions)

Also seems to be a great selection of rounds on the market for it.

I would however recommend a mod/suppressor for it. Massive difference in noise levels compared to a .22wmr.

The price of the rifle itself isn't the big consideration, it's the cost of the ammo you'll be shooting from there on out. Maybe it'll like the €13 a box cheap stuff and maybe it'll like the €30 a box stuff like mine

Remington, CZ, Tikka, Sako are all good rifles. Of course, there are others, they're just the ones I'm familiar with. I have heard good things about Howas.

I'd go along with the lads in ditching that scope. I'm more interested in the wallet abusing end of the scope market so I won't go suggesting on mid range scopes.

Depending on how accurate you and your rifle will become, 100 yards is a close in shot :) Walk before you run, keep things sensible at the start and learn yourself and yer gun.
