    Clare!

    H'up ya boya :D

    Gwan de Banner! ;)

Kerry again this year. Donaghy being back fully fit is like a new player, and a better one than Walsh last year. Looking at their bench yesterday, and they had Darran O' Sullivan, Anthony Maher, Padraig Reidy and Barry John Keane, players who would more than likely start with any other inter-county team.

Cork will be closest to them.

Can't believe people are seriously suggesting Dublin and Mayo as contenders, they've flattered to deceive for nigh-on a decade now. Not too sure on Tyrone yet, they've probably gone backwards but still, they're very dangerous.

It's hard to tell who will do it this year, given that Tyrone don't seem to be replacing the old guard very effectively and Kerry will be missing so many who were pivotal last year. Cork look to be the best shout, as long as they don't have to face Kerry in Croke Park. It's hard to imagine Mayo (unfortunately), Dublin or Galway winning it, but the year could throw up a few surprises. I think Down could be the team to watch this year, maybe not contenders but I wouldn't be surprised to see them semi-finalists.

Fair enough re Dublin and Mayo flattering to deceive but surely by that criteria Cork would be way down the pile also??

Reckon Kerry wil beat Cork in few weeks time but depending on the draw etc think Cork can progress thru backdoor to take Sam come September.

Hard to know with Tyrone, seem to be written off by a lot of people on the basis of the Cork game last august but were missing Sean Kavanagh in fairness. League campaign was not too encouraging but will still make last 4.
Dublin are only in early stages of redeveloping and when ya look thru their starting 15 while having some good players how many would get in kerry starting team?
Mayo would probably be ranked 4th at the moment but dont seem to have the defensive strength to hold a kerry or cork forward line at full tilt.

Ya then have a bunch consisting of galway kildare meath a couple of the northern teams who have the players to beat 1 of the big 3 on their day but no way could they do it twice.

Well thats my 2 cents worth anyways!!

Way down the pile? What dya mean? Cork are a stronger team than both Mayo and Dublin, and Tyrone too you'd have to say.

Okay, Cork haven't beaten Kerry in Croker in the last number of years, but the win-loss count between them is certainly balanced out by results in Munster. They haven't beaten them a headquarters yet, but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they do it this year.

Could you say the same about Dublin or Mayo?

Re-read what I said again please.
Applying your logic Cork should be ranked the same as Mayo and Dublin as both 'have flattered to deceive for nigh on a decade now'. Apart from last year they've been bet out the gate on numerous occasions. They've won nothing since 1990. So I suppose what I'm trying to say is if you're going to dismiss teams chances be consistant in what you're saying.
For the record I do think they are ahead of both Dublin and Mayo , but not as much as people think.

They could be...they played cavan there sometime last week.
Not sure about westmeath, if they are playing this evening.

    Ah ok.

Yes. Mayo were playing Westmeath this evening in Roscommon. I have no idea of the score though.

Well if they have won it will only cement my view that they will be champs in september and that the league final was only a blip along the way :pac:

    SOTS,

Listen to me now. I have seen what you post on other forums on boards and the hassle you have been causing and I can assure you as mod of GAA, there will be no repeat performances in here. If you want to rant about other forums or policies, there are places in which to do so. So stick to GAA in here and we'll get a long just fine.

Yeah you are there or thereabouts on the list. Tyrone will be keen to put in a good run after last season.. As for Dublin, Gilroy has a bit of a ruthless streak about him.
Must have been a tough decision to cut Andrews of the panel and bit by bit he is putting together a new team.
Still think Cork will do but Dublin not that far away. Maybe in a year or two time. Watch this space.

    Kerry, Tyrone, Cork

    Galway

Dublin, Mayo, Armagh, Kildare, Down, Monaghan.

    The rest.

I will never understand why people keep on tipping Monaghan. Apart from run a Kerry team that hadn't played in seven weeks close in 2007 I do not see what they have done to warrant any praise at all. Have they not been beaten in the first round of the Ulster Championship for the past two years? Maybe with Grimley around they might be different this year but I doubt it.

I wouldn't put Galway too far ahead of the rest either. A lot of hype about their forwards but as we seen last year they're far from the finished article. Same with Kildare, take John Doyle out of the game and you're in with a great chance as their other forwards lack the ability to take crucial scores to close out a game, any true Kildare football will tell you that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

Not so sure about Galway either. In Joe Bergin they have a terrific footballer why Michael Meehan is one of the most gifted players to have graced the championship in ages.
They always seem to over achieve for some reason given their abundance of talent. On their day they are a fantastic team to watch. Team that won in 1998 still the best team I have seen in ages although I realize its a different team playing now.

I dont think Monaghan will win the AI. However in the block of 5 teams I put up, they are certainly worthy of their place. A quarter final is probably the best they can do.

It looks like a 3 horse race again. However, I'm wary to pick a winner outright as I posted what is the likely hierarchy rather than pick a winner. I said Tyrone at a push but I'd not be surprised if they did not do it. I'm wary as its May and only 8 teams have played so far in 4 games. Comparison of the teams and the formbook is not really in play at this current time. We could see a dark horse emerge. We'll have to wait and see.

Because they beat Westmeath?? In a challenge?? Tell me, is your tongue firmly lodged in your cheek? Mayo have been promising so much for so long without delivering they make look An Post look good! If it goes on like this much longer either the Saw Doctors or Pat Shorttt will be writing some song taking the mickey out of Mayo GAA. Or worse still... Richie Kavanagh!

Why though? What have they done in the past two years to be mentioned with them other teams? They've gone backwards in the past couple of years in my opinion. If you're mentioning Monaghan then surely Meath, who have reached 2 All-Ireland semi finals in the past 3 seasons deserve to put in amongst them, no?

Meath have some terrific players but IMO they were the third best team in Leinster behind Dublin and Kildare last year.
They had a good draw in back door. Would be in favour of using league placing as means of seeding teams for All Ireland back door.
Ie where you finish in league will determine who you meet in back door. That way the strong teams in league if they go out face the weaker teams.
Meath were no way near the fourth best team in Ireland last year if you are going on their semi final placings as you are suggesting.

I am not saying they are the fourth best team in the country but surely they deserve to be mentioned in the same vein as Monaghan and Kildare, two teams that have achieved absolutely nothing in the past 2 years, especially Monaghan.

Kildare have achieved a lot last year in terms of where they were the previous season. A far more formideable out. Is Paul Grimley still with them?

    No, he's gone to Monaghan.

As a Galwayman I'd honestly say that this Galway team doesn't deserve to be ranked in any top 5. Christ we barely got out of New York in one piece. Right now Galway are barely in the top 10, and unless there's some dramatic improvement I don't us see getting very far this Summer. No midfield, a leaky defence and an over-rated forward line does not equal All-Ireland champions.

Monaghan are a limited team and although they'll give most teams in the country a good game i'd be astonished if but together the wins necessary for an All-Ireland.

My two cents. Kerry are still the team to beat and if Cork run into them again the result will be the same as last year. Tyrone have lost it. Mayo and Dublin just won't win it and the rest aren't capable IMO.

I had a dream there last night that Sam Maguire was passing through the streets of Cork and beating Kerry in Croke Park made the occassion special. Then woke up and realised it was a dream. Just hope its a sign of things to come in September.

Cork need a bit of sports pyschology against Kerry at Croke Park. They kicked 17 wides in last years AI final. If they converted a third of them they would have won last years AI. I still wouldnt be confident that Cork will ever beat Kerry at Croke Park.
