iphone/blackberry how does it work

I have an ordinary vodaphone simply and a nokia nothing special. I am going 2 canaries for the whole summer and want to check emails a lot on the go. Am I better off with and blackberry or an iphone? It doesn't need to be an iphone or a blackberry. Most phones will send and receive email, including the nokia you probably have.

With vodafone you can use the 'live' apn for 99 cent a day while roaming.
