Of all the animals which were dumped on me this one takes the biscuit. Meet Fritzie who has lost her mum and the farmer couldn't be bothered.

Never had a cow in my kitchen before either ;).

She's tagged now and properly signed over lest I get into trouble with the DVO.

I hate those ear tags but they are law. She is now officially mine. After all I run a Bull Breed Rescue... luckily she is a heifer calf!!

I might take her to the Petexpo :D lol!

She's fab. I grew up on a farm and can remember my dad bringing sickly calves into the kitchen to rest in front of a warm fire and we'd get to feed them with bottles.

So, what are you going to do with her?

My Mum used to do the same :)

Are you going to keep her EGAR? She's a beauty :)

Crotalus, he told me a bag of milk replacement powder is 60 Euros, actually it was 33 Euro. He also said that he couldn't be bothered with bottle feeding her. She is five days old.

I hope she will thrive and after that I'll see if she gets on with the horses.

She only was in my kitchen when she arrived. She's in the barn at night and in a run during the day (on grass).

    She's a little Shorthorn.

Hope she does. Dad houses a pony with his cattle during cold weather and they all get along fine. Bit of good-natured nuzzling and curiosity and then they're grand.

EGAR, did the farmer bring her to you? How bizarre, if he did, for him to say he wasn't bothered but then try to get someone else to help!

I'll never forget the first time I fed a day-old lamb, abandoned at the vet (another 'eh?' moment - most farmers wouldn't bother leaving it at the vet, so how did it get there?). It was like a toastrack covered by old carpet, but we mixed up the formula and started to feed, and the hide literally began to swell as she rehydrated, coming off the ribs where it had been sticking. She was like some packet of instant noodles, swelling and rounding out literally before my eyes!

EGAR what did you call her? She's gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

No big mystery there, Sweeper. The vet who pts'd the cow told him to ask me first before taking drastic measures with the calf.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

    I called her Fritzie, don't ask :D.

Reminds me of my uncles farm, it used to be a fully operational farm but not for the last few years. Now he has just a few dogs around and one sheep who seriously thinks he's a dog. Been a while since I was down there but last I seen he was legging it around the fields and clowning around with the dogs.

Ahhh shes a beaut,,,fair dues to you for taking her on,,,your a saint....:D:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

It's a pity she's not still with her mother, but she's a very lucky little lady. Fair play to you.

Only problem now is you'll never be able to look at steak in the same way. :D

Yes Whispered, but since her mother is dead there wasn't much choice.

    I don't eat steak :D.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

Sorry EGAR I worded that wrong. I meant it's a pity about her mother being dead.

    :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭EGAR

I know what you meant, Whispered :) - ideally she should be with her mum but at least now she defo wont be ending up in the food chain and can live out her life here.

Yuck, never liked the taste of beef .

All the local farmers think the dogwoman has finally lost the plot when they see her playing in the field in her stylish foal Shire rain rug :P.
