Please, can anyone out there locate the crowbanger that is echoing round the Bluestacks this last month?

Those of you who are on facebook, twitter etc? Please help

Random times; 1 am, 3 a,m, 2 am onwards; gives the impression someone is coming in from the pub and having "fun" old machine as modern ones have a photocell so they cannot work at night.

Lest anyone think farmers are only defending, crops/lambs; there are a couple of related threads on "farming". To a man the professionals aver that they do not work after a few days.

We are having now to make the terrible decision to put our dogs down.

Collie; for her first 5 years she was locked 16 hrs of the 24 in a dark, windowless shed; unwanted gift and no one in the house at night etc.

When the man died, the house was rented out; we took it and found collie at the nearby old house, tied 24/7 to a 56 lb weight.

Collies are thunder /gun phobic. And she has had to deal with all of that alone all those years.

We took on her care and when we left that house, managed to take her with us. ( no one there saw anything wrong in what they had done)

And she has blossomed; a lovely affectionate girl. Always terrified of thunder, but we have coped. And she has given us so much of herself.

She is 8 now; we sought and seek only a peaceful place for her ageing years; every dog deserves that

Now she has regressed severely; apart from the hours the crowbanger is on, she is in a state of stress and tension and panic

Almost 7 am, and since 3 am now ......

She no longer if this is not stopped urgently, has any quality of life. So this week a decision has to be made; such is her suffering now, night and day.

We need to find this man urgently now; please help us. We need to know how long this is to carry on, and ask him to stop. And if need be, tor report him to the noise polluition people.

Without a location, no one can do anything; we are utterly helpless now.

I have until Tuesday now ..... The local vets will not deal with what they call "behavioural problems" ; she needs eg valium which has been successful with these dogs in the US.

They will not prescribe it and even write me off as a fussy "mother".

A decision has to be made this week

It will break my heart simply. And I will feel a failure the rest of my days that I could not help her or get the problem stopped. All the days of my life will be with this now.

Please, email me privately on anchoresscj at yahoo dot com

The connection here is so poor that I cannot always access pms

And of course, our lives here are wrecked totally; sleep is hard to come by and work is getting neglected.

    It is a nightmare

Not just our dog; we were out at the back and several collies were barking and screaming across the valley.

Hoping to be out selling by the pier in Donegal Town later today; hot coffee etc always welcome....

    Blessings and peace and thanks

Why don't you mention it in the local press? In the democrat or highland radio?

Have you tried DAP http://www.buydap.co.uk/ ? our bichon was terrified of loud noises and it helped.

An anxiety wrap http://www.petsperfect.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1 was better but is pricey and I do not know of any Irish supplier.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/environment-geography/environmental-information/noise/how-you-complain/ gives a brief summary of the law.

    Good Luck!

    This seems a bit extreme.

If you really must get rid of your dogs, try Donegal Pet Rescue first (086 8566626, Monday to Friday, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm).

    Good luck.

This sounds very extreme to me also and I am begininning to question some of this post...

If you are not happy with your current Vet, go elsewhere for a second opinion and ask that they refer you to a dog behaviorist. Any good Vet will do this.

If you feel this is not enough then contact an Animal Welfare group as suggested in another post.

As an owner of pets, a couple of which are rescues, I don't see why you'd consider such a drastic approach without getting a second opinion?

Just seems strange to me is all...

For the love of God don't put the poor dog down
That is going a bit extreme.

The other posters here have given some very good options so until all of these options have been tried and fully checked out, please don't kill the dog!

There are plenty other vets to go too even if that means travelling further.

Puzzled by some of the replies as they do not answer the need expressed here; and fail to see thus why they have been posted.

We asked simply for help to get the noise stopped.

We are expert dog people, with a very expert animal behaviourist on team.

As anyone who works in rescue knows, we cannot save all we find. Sometimes this decision is the only one.

Dogs can be and are so damaged by years of abuse that nothing will help them.

Then the only way forward is to end their pain. You must trust us on that.

Every time this dog is exposed to noise, the terror increases 100 fold.

This is a genetic trait; and also as they age, it worsens. Every time they get that fear, it intensifies. Built in to their brain, wired in. A physical thing.

Many collies kill themselves trying to "escape" in their utter terror.
( ask google for collie rescue thunder..)

All the ideas suggested here have been tried and have made no difference to this beloved collie; if you saw her you would understand this.
There were too many long years of abuse.

We appealed on two radio stations over a week, and finally, it stopped.

We cannot get this dog to a vet, and they refuse to visit for this reason.

She is fine with me; but would not get in the car and is not socialised. If she freaked out in the car.....

We did call in at one vets; and finally got an 'emergency supply" of the terrible drug ACP...... that is banned in many lands.

After researching it, we decided against it; it does not alleviate the fear but stops the physical actions to avoid it. More terror

After the crowbanger, came the jackhammer and digger.... Back to square one...

In desperation, we tried alcohol; we keep brandy and whiskey in for our liqueur jams...

It works immediately and well... a small amount calms her totally.

So now we have the means to calm her.

And her life has a viable quality once more; it remains to be seen if this will avail in eg thunderstorm

She is so jittery still that she needs daily calming.

But still full of love for her rescuers and enjoying the sun etc.

Of course if we posted this on the pets board we would be accused of poisoning her etc etc etc. But all drugs have side effects.

Because unless you have had a dog with this degree of terror, you cannot know the utter desperation they suffer; most who reached shelters would not be considered suitable for rehoming etc.

We made the decision to give her every chance at life; but always we knew that her life may not be viable. It was a calculated risk.

PS, re vets... Last year in the long thunderstorm days, we tried every vet around for help.

The only one who would visit? Arrived at the door with a lethal injection literally in her hand as her solution to the problem.

Donegal Pet Rescue cannot help; they send most of the dogs they take in to the UK to the Dogs' Trust.

We work ourselves in animal rescue in other countries; family that is.

That would really finish this blameless collie....

And yes we have been shocked by the vets here.. so now we will manage our own.

Our trust in them has gone totally now.

Valium is the one drug that would help her. IF we could get some.

Meanwhile a wee drop of the hard stuff is the way to go.;)

Iv been following your thread regarding this poor collie over on a & p issues but I couldn't post there. Has the crowbanger stopped yet? Have you tried ringing any vets further afield as the ones in your area don't sound very helpful, maybe try some of the vets in sligo or across the border, a phone call anyways to them would be no harm? Bachs rescue remedy is meant to be good for calming anxious dogs but by the sounds of it she is too far gone for it to help.
Be careful giving her too much alcohol as since they are much smaller than a human the liver can be damaged much easier, however if it works maybe the behaviourial side effects far out weigh the health side effects.
Whatever you decide for her at least you have given her 3 years of a good life.

Blessings and thanks; not been near boards for ages...

yes, she is too abused to be amenable to any of the usual remedies. No reputable vet will prescribe without a consultation. Rightly so of course.

And we have bred and rescued dogs for decades so we know what is the situation.

15 mls works; less damaging that eg ACP or the piriton one vet suggested.

All meds have side effects anyways.

The episode with the crowbanger has caused lasting damage and has undone much of what we had achieved over the years, so we start over now, loving her and caring for her.

She is a gentle and affectionate girl and a superb guard dog.

    :D

Interesting idea though; wonder which would win, her terror or her protection?

I would bet on the latter...

Someone who should not have been here climbed the gate y;day and I don;t think he will do so again.;)
