That's a pretty broad question, but:

    Where I'd recommend:

    -Sydney, my favourite city worldwide
-Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday Islands
-Brisbane, only there for a few hours but seemed cool, nice vibe and I reckon defo worth checking out but only if it's on your route I'd say.

If you have time Byron Bay and the surrounding area was also nice, but I felt it fell short of the super-amazing place that people said it was! Nice beach town though.

As regards value, personally I didn't find anywhere cheap in Oz so maybe bear than in mind! NZ was much better value (against the euro).

Perhaps Daintree? I thought the rainforest was pretty amazing and from what i recall there isin't a whole lot there to spend money on.

Due to the size of the country, travel is not overly cheap. You are probably best to pick an area and stick to that - ie, dont try and fit too much in, if you are only spending a short time there...

The east or west coast could be a good option. You can get a greyhound bus down the east coast for a fairly reasonable price (around $250 i would think), and there is plenty to see and do there - Frazer Island, Whitsunday Islands, Brisbane, Sydney, Byron Bay etc...it is the more comercialised side of Australia, and some parts may resemble Gran Canaria and the likes (sufers paradise). Thats not to say that its fun.

I went into the centre, Ayres Rock, and while its cool to see, its not cheap at all. Flight in to Alice Springs, and you would end up paying to do a tour too, so all in all, it is the only thing you can do in that area, and will work out expensive....

The aul dollar against the euro is fairly strong at the moment too...

Suggestions to experience the real Australia

    - Go on a road trip, its an Aussie tradition to jump in the car and drive between 3 hours and 3 days to get somewhere. Stop along the way, meet the locals and see what you discover. Brisbane - Melbourne as a suggestion, Great Ocan Rd if you want a smaller version

    - Go and watch an Australian sporting event. Doesnt matter what you fancy is, but a good start is to go to Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth and attend an AFL match

    - Wineries are a great way to taste lots of local wine. Good winery areas include Margaret River (WA), Hunter Valley (NSW), Yarra Valley (Vic) or Barassoa Valley (SA). Great way to drink cheap quality wine

    - Go and door something outdoors. Whether its one of the music festivals in summer i.e, Big Day Out, camp somewhere, go to a rainforest or even go to the snow ..

    - If none of those take your fancy; there are a lot of big things that you shouldnt miss - Sydney's Bridge and Opera House, native animals in any of the outdoor areas or the zoos, Byron Bay, Daintree Rainforest, Great Ocean Rd, etc. etc.
