Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thanks for the reasoned response SlideShowBob, as one that was nearly mauled by a car pulling out of a roundabout yesterday whilst I was going around it cycling to work, I would have been of the camp of I hope this amadhan in the Jeep who I speculated probably ignored all the outriders and decided s/he was going to drive on regardless, be charged with dangerous driving, but on reflection it's unfair to jump to such conclusion until all the facts are known and an inquiry is held.

And whilst I have observed stages of both the Ras and The Tour de France previously where you would find it difficult to miss the fact that there was something BIG coming thru, that is from a perspective of someone with a passion for cycling and a passing interest in cycle races. I suppose it would be easier to understand if it was a group or an individual behind the pelaton that suffered this fate but one would expect that the outriders and such shouldn't be that far in front of the leading group but as I say til the full facts come out its probabaly unfair to jump to conclusions.

I travelled with the Rás for 5 years as a Garda escort. On a decent you have to get far far ahead of the riders as they decend much faster than a motorcycle or a car. I got caught by a group on a long decent one year and it was a challenge to stay upright among the cyclists. I was hauling 300kg of motorcycle versus your top lightweight bikes. It is likely that there were no marshalls or Gardai with the group from the top of the decent. Even if you do see something you are on the limit trying to stay ahead of the riders and it may not be possible to stop safely.

Also in the Rás handbook it warns that riders need to be aware that the race is held on open roads and that they should obey traffic laws, on a blind right hander even when racing I'd have been reluctant to cross the centre white line by more than a foot or two, especially on a descent - easier said than done tho, especially on a race as big and as fast as the Rás

Is there more route info more detailed than http://www.fbdinsuranceras.com/event/fbdras_625.shtml available anywhere? Trying to pick a good spot to watch from on Sunday.

if you get near Skerries I'd saw go to Ardgillen hill as they go up 2 if not three times and has a nice 11% grade so you can see how fast they go after 8 days of cycling. If I wasn't marshalling that's where I'd be.

An d then on to the bbq in Beasty's demense apparently. Near ardgillen castle but bigger;)

That's what one of the other marshalls said too - about Ardgillen, not the BBQ. :p I'll have to trace out the route around the demense on Saturday, see where they're going. Thanks lads.

They are only going up the hill 3 times, whereas shaungil's standard drill requires a minimum 5 ascents.

Look out for bcmf at the top of that hill - I believe he actually lives in Ardgillan Castle, and therefore has a very big garden for his bbq.

all change today lads, the team managers not been able to talk to their riders by raido has made some difference ,what do you all think ?

For gods sake man I told you not too tell anyone about it.I dont want any of that cycling riff-raff on my grounds. I am locking the gates so no of your kind can trespass on my property. Any one caught will be shot and fed to the hounds.

yeah but the difference is that the Ras'ers (and Mr. Skeffington)go up that hill in the 53ring

obviously the roads will be closed to traffic early, but whats the story with cycling up the hill - how late could you leave that (dont wanna be waiting up there all day beforehand). maybe coming from the lusk road, same way the club spin goes on a sat morning, would be better?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

it will only be a rolling closure although skerries will be closed from early I would say.You can come in from Balrothery and go up to Ardgillen from there.

My first visit to this forum. Not really a cycling fan as such, took some pictures today in Galway and thought I would post a few here as it might be of interest to some here.

Anyone know what the story is with Planet X rider Stephen Barrett?

I wouldn't normally be so personal about a rider here it's just that he seems to promote himself very well and has very high aspirations:

    http://www.stephen-barrett.com/

Looking at his current standing in the Ras maybe does not reflect the same standard: 64th over 17min down.

Stuck me also he got on a few Irish teams in last year or two without significant results, maybe I missed them though.

Does having a high profile website help in such matters in this technological age!?!?

2008 FBD Insurance Rás winner Stephen Gallagher (Britain Sigmasport Specialized) was best Irishman in ninth, while Fraser Duncan (Dublin Eurocycles) was top county rider in 12th. Ghyllebert’s An Post team-mate Connor McConvey and Ryan Sherlock (Dublin Eurocycles) also made the split, which started approximately halfway through the 169 kilometre stage.

Nice one Ryan! Presumably too knackered to post tonight. :)

44.23kph today, that's got to hurt.

I think the track is his main focus these days although he certainly gets up there on the road. He has been national 1km TT champion the last two years and managed three medals in last year's national championships (including the gold in the 1km TT.)

It's a difficult sport to make it in, no harm in trying to promote yourself.

PS Ryan Sherlock is having an absolutely fabulous RAS.
Time to make the switch full time :D

Young Lavery is more aggressive than his results show so far as is Stephen O Sullivan.
Mark Cassidy aggressive and riding well and Connor McConvey a revelation.

The feeling is the present yellow is not going to hold it and todays finish will have "the animals coming in 2 by 2".
Finish expected between 14:16 and 14:55 (unless very slow when 15:54 projected but as average is 27mph so far I don't think thats likely)

This is true. They also state that when you become old and slow you have to come back and annoy people.

Lactic acid is to cyclists what sunlight is to vampires
    What a line

    It seems RobFowl is busy
However, following the race I consulted the race doctor as I was having trouble ‘down there’. Every rider will probably experience it at some stage and I had to get this checked for I couldn’t sit on the bike without excruciating pain. Every pothole sent a jolt of pain up through me.
“One, two, three, four, five, sss...how on earth do you cycle?” he questioned. Horrified, he counted the ingrown hair follicles on me. “You need to get anti-biotics for this as soon as the race is over,” he continued.

I was in a bad crash today (yes, the lightweights are totalled... glad I bought their insurance!). chased and after an hour on the revit got on (on an illfitting bike), puctured, chased and was a bit fecked for the last climb. An annoying day but I didn't lose anything on GC.

No web yesterday so yesterdays post here: http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/2010/05/2010-fbd-ras-stage-4.html (15th, 2nd country rider)

and todays is already up here: http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/2010/05/2010-fbd-ras-stage-5.html

I'm now apparently and offical "Ras man"... Frecking epic today.

Well done Ryan, savage riding - "i started attacking coz I was a little bit bored" - love it!

If Lavery quits like he said he would you'll be the man to watch for the county rider classification - very impressive.

Tomorrow should be a stage to your "liking" if bike / body is ok?

Thanks again & hope it goes well over the next few stages.
