Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I took this photo for Holy Communion, the mother isnt smiling - its the best of a bunch of images taken. The mother wants me to put a smile on her face, I've tried and failed, I've used the liquify tool, tried warping, cloning nothing works.

Anyone out there who can help?!!??

I know you love a challenge - so please please help?

You have a picture of her where she is smiling? Similarish pose?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

although typically even though I photoshop to all limits...that's sort of against my principles. But I'd need the second photograph with the smile if possible.

That's a bit mad. I'd never heard of people wanting that kinda thing done. Getting rid of spots, etc. is I assumed would be common, but changing an entire facial expression?

I don't think you'll get away with just changing the mouth, by the way. Then the eyes will look weird. You'll need to swap out the whole face.

Hell of a request ,though (in my opinion).

Do you get such requests often, out of curiousity?

Saw your pic edit before you took it down, made my day! , thanks!

All of the photos taken have the same expression.

Its the first time i've ever been asked such a question from anyone, the normal stuff yes, spots, etc...I'm afraid I dont have a photo with any smile, if I did i'd be laughing.

I assume the mother was present when the images where taken ?
I would simply say in a polite manner that she was present and the child didnt seem to want to smile..

Then I would suggest that she could commission a professional re-toucher at her own cost to "fix" a smile onto her daughters face..

    Just my 2cents..

The mother is in the picture, she is the one who wants me to put a smile on her face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭sunny2004

my bad, read the op in error..

I stand by my suggestion, its her problem if she is like that in all of them, and I would suggest she pays for it to be done professionally..

Did you get paid for shooting this image ?

The easiest and cheapest option is to just put the same outfits on again and go to the church and take the photos again. Or else you can go with my flawless photoshop job. It's a bit rushed, I only had two hours to do it.

she looks like a shaved bearded man here, terrible, although I'll be honest and say I didn't see the originals.

That's exactly how she looks when she smiles so it can't be terrible. FACT.

To really get anything decent OP you're going to have to provide one or more photos of the mother where she is smiling. Photoshop is a powerful tool but there are limits, it can't work miracles with nothing.

I really and truly hate to be a nuisance here, but these are real people you are talking about in this country and do us a favour and bear in mind that if you were the subject of this thread and happened across it, you'd probably feel a certain amount of hurt.

Being cruel is not an attractive trait. Some of the posts in this thread are very cruel.

    Cool it please.

    That's a mental request...

People who don't understand photoshop seem to think it's as easy as the crap on CSI. I mean a smile isn't just located in the mouth, you're eyes, eyebrows and cheeks change completely - some peoples ears even move up too!

You could spend days on it and still not have a convincing job. What she's asking is really not within the range of a photographer - you're there to capture the scenes - and do touch ups afterwards. She's asking for an entire makeover here. It's not your fault at all - the onus was on her to present herself as she wanted to be captured.

I agree with telling her it's next to impossible...
She wants this :pac: to become this :D

That's the shot, me thinks. Looks natural enough.

I've attached my attempt, with the liquefy filter in Photoshop. I also fixed the dads eye as it wasn't very flattering.

I think he might have been looking at the camera, with his good eye.

Good job on the mother though.

What's wrong with people? Just take the photo again, forget about using photoshop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Maybe the woman is paranoid about her teeth and never gives
a full smile because of this?

Also I don't see how the photo can be taken again....make them
go back to the church and dress up again on a different day???

If I had to go with one of the "modified" ones, Borderfox's attempt
looks the most natural so far.

Well she's the one complaining that she isn't smiling.

How can you not see that the photo can be taken again? Is it really such a hard thing to do? It's three people and a church. If she wants a decent photo that badly then it's not that big a deal.

All jokes aside there is a good tutorial on changing a frown into a smile
in Scott Kelby's book "Photoshop CS2 for digital photographers"

I use CS4, but most (if not all) tutorials can be applied aswell from the CS2 version.

Perhaps it's also in his CS4 book, he has excellent books.

Try the warp tool in photoshop. Just select around her mouth and raise the corners of same. It will not give you a gleaming smile but you will get a nice grin

  • Registered Users Posts: 65 ✭✭couscous007

I havent gone away - its just i'm not to well at present been bed bound.

I really appreciate all you comments, and attempts, I offered to re-shoot the photo - but no - they dont want that. I can do no more.

The lesson learnt is that if you dont smile - dont conmplain!!!
Thank you so much - I really appreciate every single comment.

Is there no way to get the family to pose again? For me the lack of smile is not the first thing I notice, I have hestitated mentioning it but each time I look at the shot and the great work people have done to fix the smile the first thing that strikes me is the child's pose. She seems to have her tilted down and then she appears to be looking up through half closed eyes. Of course maybe it's just me.

Have to say I think coolmoose did a great job.

I think the OP caught the moment perfectly.
The lady is close to tears, gritted teeth and dimpled chin.
Cute little girl is happy and has the same eyes as the lad averting his gaze.
Its pretty obvious the event meant a lot to them.
    You'd never recapture that moment.
