    Friday Rest day

    Saturday
Went to Donadea for the 50K as support crew /cheering squad. Lots of standing around in the cold, but it was actually quite enjoyable and I got to meet and chat with lots of boards-ies. Some good running going on too. (50k )

Got home and didn't really feel like running. Knackered and cold to the bone.

    Sunday
Plan was to do my 8mi hilly loop. Up early for a Mom's Taxi run. Sat on the couch when I got back and got really dozy. Felt wrecked all morning. Eventually decided to just go for a few miles and see how I felt. Did 5 miles slowly in the (very flat) park before I called it a day.
Hope I'm not coming down with something... Ballycotton is just 2 weeks away now.

    Monday 20th Feb
Pilates class. Arm work galore so the shoulder was giving out this morning :(

    Tuesday 21st Feb
4.5 mi in the plan, but as I wussed out on my long run on Sunday I decided to go a bit farther. Planned at 5-ish mile route that turned out to be exactly 5.5 miles. It was slow, but I felt better than expected really, given how awful I felt all weekend. Need to get the pace up in the next few weeks though. Don't think I'll be pulling any PB's in Ballycotton or Conn, but it'd be nice to get home before the stragglers

But I did get to start my run while it was still bright, which was nice. Lots of runners out this evening too. It all felt very friendly.

    Wednesday 22nd Feb
Intervals: 8x400mt at 7:40/mi goal pace

OK. Didn't think I was going to get anywhere near 7:40/mi so I decided to take it easy on myself and picked a favourable 400mt stretch to do these on. So the recovery was slightly uphill and into the wind, while the intervals were slightly downhill and with the wind at my back... cheating much? :p

So the pace was faster than I expected, but I'm not kidding myself - it was very assisted by the terrain/ conditions. One mile each warm-up and cool down brought the run to just under 6.5 miles.

    Duration (seconds)|107.7|110.3| 112.2|115.9|109.6|108.3|108.0|108.8
    Pace /mi | 7:11|7:22| 7:29| 7:44| 7:19| 7:14| 7:12|7:16

The pace wasn't exactly even. Ho hum.

    Thursday
Okay. Busy day with lots to do so didn't get out. Decided to put this off until Friday morning. Set the alarm, went to bed and...

    Friday
...turned off the alarm and turned over for more sleep zzzzzzz :o
So I packed my bag and brought my kit to work for a lunchtime run. Don't really like running at work. Besides the looks and comments as you leave the building in your shorts , I have SOOO much hair that washing it means I'm sitting with a wet head that's slowly becoming a frizz nest

Anyway. Turns out it was a lovely run. I do like running in daylight
Weather was great - calm and perfect temperatures. Only had about 30 minutes, but at least I got some miles in - better than nothing.

    Saturday
10 miles LSR on a lovely sunny February afternoon. :D
It's days like this that make you love running...

So I did my killer hilly loop again - twice - and finished off with a couple of miles in the park. What a lovely run though, really enjoyed that. OK, those hills are murderous, but I know them now so I guess they're not holding any mystery anymore. Think I managed a better pace on them this week too. It felt hard (of course), but the pace was a bit tighter and the recovery (downhill) was definitely quicker.

Got really hungry by mile 8 but pushed on (passing the road to home) to finish out the 10 miles.

In Greystones tomorrow for the gym competition (see you there Rachel:rolleyes:) so don't hold much hope of getting a run in. Wait and see.

    Ballycotton next week

Yea, Thanks RR, but the pace is way off where it should be. I haven't had a great start to the year so I can't complain. I'll be taking it handy at Ballycotton and just want to enjoy the run.
It was good to get a solid run in this week though.:D

Hope you have a better week this week. Look after yourself! Don't want to be sick for next weekend

I hope so too. I'm praying I wake up tomorrow feeling a lot better than I do right now. I just keep telling myself better now than in 5/6 days (it's not really cheering me up though)

    Tuesday
5 miles done. Plan was to get in 4.5 but when I finished my route I had clocked 4.63 so just had to keep going to the even 5 ;)

Kept it steady and was surprised to see I actually ran a bit of a tempo session - hmmm... first 2 miles were around 9:20/mi, next 2 were both at 8:49/mi and the last (uphill) was a SLOW 10:16 :o

But I quite enjoyed this. Left calf was a wee bit tight after so I'll have to keep an eye on that.

    Wednesday
Tempo run in the plan. I don't like tempo runs :(.
So I set of comfortably and when the beep went to tell me mi 1 was done I attempted to up the pace. Found this REALLY hard today. And the calf was tight again, so I had to stop and give it a bit of a stretch half way through.
So it ended up being more of a 2x1mile interval set rather than a tempo.

Pace wasn't all that fast, so don't know why it felt so tough.

Anyway. Won't get out tomorrow, so probably only 1 run left before the Ballycotton 10 on Sunday. It had better be a good one

    Sunday 04 Match

Headed to Cork yesterday evening and arrived at the Garryvoe hotel with an unfamiliar sun shining in the sky and glinting off the sea. What a beautiful location! Off to bed early after a walk on the beach and a lovely dinner, hoping the weather would hold for the morning.

Up bright and early and the weather was still fab, so packed the gear and got on the shuttle bus to the race location. It was a tad chilly hanging around and I was sorry I hadn't paced another layer in my kit bag. Met up with a few people for a chat and some good wishes and everyone went their own way to change, warm up and get to the appropriate start spot. I had my windbreak jacket on over my t-shirt and it was so cold I was seriously thinking of running with it. At the last minute I thought better of this and dashed back to the bag drop area to stuff it in my bag. Back to the start area with a few minutes to go thinking "all grand"

...and then, just as the gun went, I noticed I forgot to start my GPS :(
Mad fumbling of buttons and bezel (with gloves on, of course:rolleyes:) but it was taking what seemed like AGES to pick up the satellites. At this stage I was almost last :o in the start area, so I just hit go and went. What a disaster.

This fup-up meant that I spent the first 3 or so miles weaving around slower runners. It was funny really and in a bit I was being followed by another (novice) runner who reckoned it'd be better received for me to 'make a hole' rather than him. We ran together for about the first 5 miles and he kept me distracted and entertained with stories of 200k cycle races and other such nonsense ;).

We turned a corner at about mile 5 and the wind picked up and hit us straight in the face. This was accompanied by a LOVELY hail shower for a few very cold minutes. My buddy powered on and I fell off the pace slightly at this point, so I ran the last few miles solo. The hail and spitty rain stopped after a bit, and I settled into my pace again. Around the 7 mile mark I could hear the crowds cheering for "Rachel" - obviously a local, I though. It wasn't until I passed Rachel Allen around the 7 mile mark that I realised how come everyone knew "Rachel" :P

The run from mile 8 to the finish is a doozy, but I knew what was coming from last year, so I just put the head down, concentrating on the breathing and keeping the pace as even as possible. Lots of great support for this section too, which was great - much needed :D. Even got a shout out from RunRabbit with about 600mt to go (she ran a great time - very impressed!)

Pumped the arms and legs to the finish line - didn't really know my time with my stoopid watch mistake, but I though I'd done better than last year. Checking the official results I came home in 1:28:17, which is not a PB, but is a minute faster than last years Ballycotton run, so I'm happy with that.

It was a good morale booster for Connemara Half, and the hill at the end didn't kill me. Don't get me wrong - I felt it, but it didn't take it out of me THAT much.

Met my running buddy from the start of the race in the finisher chute, so I didn't drop off the pace too much. I think he got in 20 or so seconds ahead of me.
Collected my lovely mug, my gear and my OH (t-shirt in hand and a big grin on his face) and we shivered our way back to the shuttle bus to the hotel. They let us use the leisure centre to shower and change (lovely place, lovely people and highly recommended) before we got into the car for the trek back to the big shmoke.

    Another successful running weekend.

Hearty congratulation to the race organisers for a great race in a beautiful location. Aside from the arctic chill (which they can't REALLY effect) it was a near perfect day. Can't believe they do all that so smoothly and efficiently for a mere 15 euro (including shuttle buses in from the outlying areas!) Brilliant.

Awww shucks, thanks for all the comments... :p

    Monday 5th
Pilates at lunchtime. Missed my pilates last week due to work stuff, and managed to almost do the same this week. Left work a bit later than I should have and got there when the class was already underway - but at least I got there . The concentration was firmly on arms this week so lots of pushups and weights - which I'm feeling in the shoulder region today!
Just as well it wasn't all bum/leg work though. After Sunday that might not have been very pretty ;)

    Thursday
4 miles around the local park, with some company. The young one didn't go to her club (my fault - I was too late out of work) so she came with me for a run instead. It was great fun. We did 2 miles slow to warm up (with some interruptions for a stitch!) and then some fartlek sets as she flew ahead and wiped the floor with me each time:D. Now I know I'm not a speedster, but is it bad when your 11 year old can out-sprint you by 10 meters over a 50 mt stretch:eek::p? Jogged her back to the house and kept going to take the total to 4 miles.

It's great to shake things up now and again. A lovely evening for a run too and the sun was still there when we were out. Super!

    Sunday 11th March
It's a step back week in the plan so I had 8 miles to do. Decided to try a gel on this one. It's been SO long since I took a gel and they never really agree with me so I thought it prudent to have a few trials before Connemara.
I took it before I left, and then went to do my lovely hilly 4 mile loop. All OK. Found it tough today but it was a bit warmer than it has been so I'm assuming that was contributing to the effort. What a lovely day out there today!

Of course I had to dash back to the loo after the first loop (damn gels!) so headed to the park for the last few miles. A bit of a 'run interrupted', but I kept it going and even enjoyed it (except for that rush back to the house!)

    Tuesday
    1 mile Fit4Life race
1st time I've really done a mile race so a PB was guaranteed ;)
This was run as part of the Wicklow Fit4Life League and it was on the track in Greystones. It's a really lovely facility with floodlights and all!

Loads of people turned out for this. I didn't know what sort of pace I should be doing, but I reckoned (on a good day) I should be able for about 7:45 /mi so I tentatively joined the 06:30 - 08:00 group.
    BANG (starter pistol)
Off we went. Hadn't a clue what I should be doing, how fast I should be going (or how slow), so settled into a hardish but doable pace and just kept plugging. 4 laps around the track. I was towards the end of the pack but was ok with that - I was never going to be winning anything :p
On the last lap I decided to try to catch the girl ahead and just went for it. Though she might be just that far away to catch, but just got her with about 5mt's to go. Happy out.

And get this - Garmin time says 07:10 :D
I didn't think I had that in the legs!

Did a couple of miles warmup before that so totals up to about 3 miles
    Summary
    1 mile in 07:10 07:11 Official Time :D
total about 3 miles in about 08:10/mi pace

...and as I expected given recent training runs, I got beaten by my 11year old. She ran in the kids races. Did a 07:03:rolleyes: Obviously gets her speed from her Daddy then :p He ran a 04:57!

    Thursday 15th Mar
Did a pilates class at lunchtime. None Monday (for the bank holiday) so thought I'd fit it in early :D. Playing on deflated balls today - press-ups balancing on the ball , squats and crunches holding it between the knees / ankles / etc. Lovely! :p

Evening run: Left work a bit later than I should have, so I was pushed for time because had to collect the young one when her club was finished. Parked up and legged it. Did a 3(ish) mile loop, back to the car to check the time, had another 10 minutes so ran out again for a bit more. Back again at the car with seconds to spare... phew!

    Saturday 17th March
Another weekend, another race. What's going on around here?!

The OH signed up for this one, so I kinda got pulled into this without knowing much about it. Had to do 5 miles today anyway, so why not? The idea was to do it at HM pace(about 9min/mi) and that should fit well with my long run tomorrow.

Left Dublin with the sun shining, but I brought my gloves/hat/etc. just in case, more of a habit than any forward thinking... Half way up the M3 the black clouds rolled in and the heavens opened, and I started to feel the 'chicken' rising :p. "I'm not going out in that!" Got to Kildalkey Community Centre in plenty of time and collected the number, still declaring that I wasn't running if the rain hadn't subsided. Sat in the car until 10 minutes before the off and decided the rain had died down enough so I had no excuse :o.

It was a half mile jog over to the start line from where we were, which I took as my (mini) warm up. It was still drizzling so I wore my jacket and gloves, but opted for the peaked running cap instead of the hat. (Did I mention that I hate the rain?)

The runners were gathered on the roadway with a couple of marshals and some gardaí managing the waiting cars. Everything was drenched and there were puddles as big as paddling pools up and down the road. Chatted to a few familiar faces before the off. There was a clang, and off we went. I tried to settle into my HM pace, but when I looked at the watch after about a quarter mile I was doing just over 8 minute pace and told myself to slow the heck down! This was a training run, after all. I settled myself a bit and let the faster people pass me. Found someone running a steady pace of about 8:40 so ran along with her for a bit.

After about a mile and a half I felt she was struggling and the pace was slowing, so set my sights on a runner just ahead and picked up the pace a bit. Grand. Caught her easy enough and just kept that pace going and found myself picking off runner after runner.

As the miles ticked off, the weather got better and by the third mile I was a bit sorry I wore that jacket. But it is very light, so I didn't get overheated or anything - just a bit uncomfortable. The rain had done it's bit though. Several places there were puddles the whole way across with road (for road read boreen) with no option but to get the feet wet (did I mention I hate getting wet?) I'm sure the folks behind me were laughing at the little screeches as I splashed my way through. :P

With soggy feet and too many clothes, I kept plodding, setting my sights on the next runner ahead and just picking them off, but making sure I wasn't working too hard (this is a training/pace run...). There were lots of marshals at every turn, and even a few hardy souls out cheering us on, and I felt it was way too early when we ran back into the village. I guess I must've missed the 4 mile marker then.

I was a bit confused when the marshals directed me into a housing estate:confused:, but then noticed the Finish Line gantry at the other end of the road. I had thought we would be arriving at it from the other direction!? As I rounded the bend to the finish I heard the announcer say we were just over 41 minutes.

Stopped the garmin when I passed under the gantry. 41:27, which - surprise surprise - is a new 5 mile PB! Cool  There was loads left in the tank but that's for another day. Connemara is the goal. Only 2 weeks now.

Still, nice way to spend a rainy Saturday. And a handy unexpected PB too. :D

    Plus 0.58 mi warmup jog

    Thanks littlebug.
The goal for the Connemara half is to beat my previous (very soft) Connemara time of 02:16:xx. My HM PB is 01:57:33 and I don't think that course is going to let me get anywhere near that
Hoping to get in under 02:10:00.
Closer to 02:00 would be great.

    Sunday 18th March
Mothers day - but no lie in here! The little miss was desperate to do the MSB St Patricks 5k festival race in town, so I reluctantly agreed and took the other young fella along to keep her company while I did a warm-up & cool down around it to clock up the required LSR miles.
Not an ideal LSR, but sure anything to keep the monsters happy :p

Got into town a bit late but they were still taking registrations, so we tootled over to the Family Registration table and signed up. Met a host of boardsies -hi gang, nice to catch up - and some other unexpected heads. I abandoned my kids and headed out to squeeze in a couple of miles before the start. Got back to the Mansion House with a few minutes to spare, dashed to the loo, and we all headed to the start. My young lad took the chip and he moved up towards the front end of the starting mass. I hung back with herself. My job was to pace her to get in under 29 minutes and not let her stop (her instructions!).

As we set off, the sun was shining, the wind was calm(ish) and the crowds were all in great form. Lovely day for a run! I tried to keep the pace even at around the 9mi/min and we had some slower bits and faster bits as the stitches /sore knees/ tired toes :rolleyes:/ wiggling eyebrows :eek:/ etc. had to be dealt with, but she performed really well and we came home in about 27:40, with her usual sprint finish, of course.:D

After we met up with her brother (who finished comfortably in 21:59:rolleyes:) ...my kids obvously get their speed from the Krusty side!

I left them again and did another 5 miles to take me to the requisite 10 for the day. Uneventful running but very enjoyable.

No running. Did 3 hours in the Dundrum Shopping centre - I thought my feet were bleeding into my shoes by the end, that place just wrecks the feet! Not exactly a rest day so...

    Tuesday
5 miles around the lovely scenic Ballyogan Road:rolleyes:
Nice steady pace and a lovely evening for a run.

    Wednesday
    10x400mt @5K pace

Another lovely scenic run up and down Ballyogan road...:D

I did the 400's from the top of the road down, so they were all run on a slight downhill. Cheating a bit, me thinks?;) But I did up the pace and I think the (slightly) faster cadence I get from this is probably no harm, training-wise. That's what I'm saying, anyway.

So 10 reps of 400mts at 5k pace... whatever that is! I had the watch set to between 7:25 and 7:50 /mi, with the aim of staying around the 7:40 pace. The actual paces were:
    Interval| Duration(seconds)|pace /mile
    1 |107.1 | 7:09
    2 |111.3 | 7:25
    3 |112.3 | 7:29
    4 |111.3 | 7:26
    5 |111.2 | 7:25
    6 |113.3 | 7:33
    7 |111.5 | 7:26
    8 |113.8 | 7:36
    9 |111.1 | 7:25
    10 |109.0 | 7:16

Felt OK doing these, but I was pretty wrecked at the end. Maybe a bit too eager on the first one, but the rest were fairly consistent and I was happy with that. I did 400mt recovery between each, and with a warm up and cool down it took me to just over 7.5 miles.
    Summary 7.52 miles in 1:18:19
    Avg Pace: 10:25 min/mi

    Thursday
4 miles today, and for a nice change I got to run in the park, during daylight :D Lovely jubley. Really nice run.

My hip was a bit 'clicky' (noticed this yesterday doing the intervals) so did some specific stretches for that after. Hopefully it's nothing but I'll have to keep any eye on that.

    Friday
Mad night out with the girls. Great craic but no running :D

    Saturday
3 miles in the plan, so after a leisurely lazy morning I trooped over to the park for a quick trot around the grass. It was a lovely day for a run, so really happy that I got out - even if it was for just 3 miles.
No problem with the hip today either<phew>. Don't think it's totally gone away, but the stretching seems to have eased things out a bit.

    Avg Pace: 9:20 min/mi

    Sunday
Not an ideal days running. The plan had a 10 mile LSR, but life conspired against me and I had to fit it in between one taxi run and the next. So got out and managed to fit in 7.5 miles. Very warm and sunny too. Not the best run but better than nothing.
Spent the afternoon and evening sitting inside watching the regional gymnastics competition. At least we came home with medals, so it wasn't all for nought;).
    Summary 7.5 miles 1:11:52
    Avg Pace: 9:35 min/mi

    Monday
    The usual Pilates torture :D
She said we'll have buns of steel soon... though they feel more like rocks today

    Tuesday
Might not get to do my tempo run tomorrow (family stuff) so did a 5 mile tempo today instead. Ran out around Greystones so there was a nice little hill there! Still, I felt good and enjoyed the run. The weather was great too.

Middle miles were 8:36/8:28/8:26 which was a nice progression. All good.
    Summary 5.00 miles in 44:33

    Wednesday
Family stuff, so an interim rest day

    Thursday
2 miles in the plan (on the wind down for Sunday) but I squeezed in 2.25 miles before I had to head off on a mom's taxi run. Nice run, but a bit short...
    Summary 2.25 miles in 19:52
    Avg Pace: 8:50 min/mi
