Repairing a cracked travertine countertop

A month ago, we installed a travertine stone countertop in our bathroom. This was our second attempt, the previous countertop having cracked during installation.

Today, I leant against the counter by mistake, putting some of my weight along the edge - by no means all though; I reckon 3-4 stone max. Anyway, the counter cracked :-(

Having gone through a lot of hassle and delay getting it replaced first time around, I can't face doing it all again - especially since this time around, we have basins attached using a very strong glue that is unlikely to budge, so we'd be looking at probably replacing those too.

Are there any companies close to Dublin that specialise in repairing stone countertops? Lots in the US, but I couldn't dig up any Irish ones on Google.

Happy days - our supplier sent around one of his guys to repair it, and it's all back in one piece now. He also built a new frame underneath it to prevent it cracking again.

While you can see the crack if you look very carefully, it's not at all obvious at a casual glance -- the veins running through the stone attract the eye instead. As well as gluing it back together, the minor chips on the surface were filled, polished and then sealed, so the surface feels fully continuous.

Well done. I would have gotten it repaired as well. Its not abnormal for trav to need repairing at some stage.,

That looks like a really good job. Who is your supplier? I'm thinking of getting a travertine countertop.

We got the countertop made to our specification from Tuscan Terracotta, originally on Cross Avenue in Dunlaoghaire but I think they've moved to Deansgrange now. They also supplied our shower tray and mosaic tiles for the shower walls, travertine floor tiles, and a tiler to put it all in for us (Andrew from Latvia or Lithuania, I think - very skilled guy).

While the job wasn't without its hiccups, they went above and beyond the call of duty to get everything sorted and leave us happy. We were delighted with the final result, and would definitely recommend them. Very competitive prices too -- they import directly from a family quarry in Italy.

(No affiliation other than as a satisfied customer -- we originally came across them at the Ideal Homes fair.)
