I'm guessing that the two of these are incompatible? My trusty old Yamaha amp that does Digital 5.1 and DTS happily doesn't make a peep when fed with DTS HD.

    I guess I need a new amplifier? Suggestions / prices please :-)

DTS HD is one of the new HD Audio formats, only available over HDMI, cannot be carried by optical connection, and yoour amp has to be specifically able to do decoding for it, it is different to standard DTS

it does actually contain a DTS audio trck+ a difference track which is used to make up the HD aspect

If your amp can use Linear PCM and you were playing Bluray through the PS3 I think your safe enough as the PS3 takes the HD audio and puts it out as Linear PCM as far as I remember, after changing a few settings. (Someone will correct me if I'm wrong :))

    Hi Zaphodbeeb

Have a chat with the Richer guys in Belfast or check out www.richersounds.ie

A/V amps with decoders for Dolby Digital True-HD and DTS Master Audio are very keenly priced now days.

Some very nice ones out there that wont break the bank - unless you want them to.....

    Cheers

depends on what blu ray player and connection you are using.

some (blu ray) can decode hd format and send the signal via 5.1 to the amp.

send via 5.1 doesn't mean a lot in fairness. What some players can do is decode the HD audio track and send it as an LPCM stream over HDMI. There are 3 ways to get HD audio from player to amp

    1) Sent as bitstream over HDMI only, amp does decoding
    2) Sent as LPCM over HDMI only, player does deocding or Disc has a native LPCM track
    3) Sent over multichannel analog line level(Phono), decoding done by player.

not trying to be picky, but 5.1 isn't a connection type and you can't send anything by 5.1. 5.1 is just a number of channels in a multichannel audio track

    zaph,

apologies for being late to the party and thanks to all for the info - Moss - are you looking to become our Saturday boy? :D.

Anyway Zaph many of the new (even) budget receivers come with DTS DTS HD as standard including the excellent Onkyo TXSR308 which is now reduced to a mad £229.95 or we have the really popular and extremely well equipped TXSR608 at £449.95.

The new Denon & Pioneer ranges are also just around the corner and the specs on these look excellent as well - Keep me posted if the buying itch gets irrestiable or if we can assist in any way,
