Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi folks

I drive a '04 Toyota Avensis D4D, its a 2.0 diesel. In the last couple of weeks I've noticed a strange humming noise when I drive it, specifically when I break or decelerate in any way. It seems to kick in when I go over 1600rpm and disappears again once I go over 2200rpm. Its not extremely loud but I can hear it clearly and I can feel the vibration from it on the break pedal. Its driving me nuts.

    Any ideas??

Thanks in advance for any replies

WOW!! you have a car that can rev to that much:eek:. You mean 1600 and 2000rpm. Could be wheel bearing,or warped discs.

Does it happen in any particular gear? Try slowing down in neutral and see what happens.

Make sure all your wheel nuts are tight, and jack up the car and see if there is any free play in any one of the 4 wheels.

I've driven a good few D-4Ds that whine in gear, particularly 4th and 5th.

The new ones(Euro 5s) do it a lot in 1st and 2nd as well.

Actually the Euro 5 D4Ds sound quite a bit different to the older Euro 4 D4Ds, the engine note is a lot harsher sounding in them, they sound more like a VW 1.9 TDI than a modern common rail diesel.
