Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Banjo advice

    Hello folks,

I bought a five-string banjo yesterday - I've played guitar for years but never the banjo, and always had an interest. I've ordered Earl Scrugg's bluegrass book; there's such a range of options on the net that I think it might be handiest to work my way through a book. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My main query is about the finger picks - naturally I find them a bit unwieldy and cumbersome. Should I just practice all the time with them, or should I just get used to the banjo and use my fingers until I feel confident with the basics?

Edit: I got it from the Dublin Guitar Centre on Exchequer Street; nice people and worth heading in there to have a look. They also have the cheapest strings I've seen in Dublin.

Hey Irol. Good luck with the banjo,I've been learning for 1½ years so far. You have a head start being grounded in Guitar but it is completely different. The Scruggs book although written by the main man, isn't really beginner friendly, although it may be more useful to you than a complete newb in instruments like I was. Janet Davies, you can teach your self 5 string banjo,or Murphy Henrys video's are the two most recommended. The picks are essential so best sticking with them, honestly a week or so and they'll feel natural. The plastic one can be adjusted by dipping in hot water and then using a pliers to get the fit right. banjo hangout is the main site for all things banjo, well worth the visit. You will be advised to get lessons,it's the best way to start, well, certainly was for me. Drop me a pm if your interested, the guy I go to is one of only two in Dublin that teach it. Have to admit though,it's been a slow process for me,plucking like earl is a long way away:)

Thanks for the reply, dubtom. My main issue is with the thumbpick as it feels unusual to not have my thumb resting on the string. I guess I'll just give them a go anyway.

I'll have a think about the lessons; I'm not sure I can give the commitment at the moment (especially with the World Cup coming up!). Maybe towards the end of the summer.

I'll check that site out though; there's so much stuff on the net that I think I need to pick one site and work from that.
