the top of the bubbler gets *bubbled* off leaving the brew exposed to the air
 You are putting water in the airlock reservoirs, aren't you? If the reservoirs are full, how would air get in?

Your beer being exposed to air isn't a problem (the beer protects itself) and it's not really what the airlock is supposed to do. Most homebrewers I know don't bother with an airlock.

On second thoughts, no I'm not.

I'm going to ask for a Homebrewing sub forum

    Yeah! :)

    Yeah 2 :pac:

I am putting water in the reservoir, hence the bubbles. The problem was with the type of airlock I have the bubbles were forcing the top off the airlock. I've solved it now by cunningly leaving the top slightly askew.

PM has been sent to Admins, CMods and other Mods of this Forum.

So far, a CMod has said he's "for" the forum.

We may have to start a thread in the Forums Forum asking for it, as is the procedure, so if we do I'll make a thread in here making sure everyone goes in and supports it :)

I'll support that, the megathread is a bit of a nightmare to navigate if you're trying to focus on one particular kind of beer.

Looks like it's been approved, only a matter of time now.

    Nice one :)

With that particular airlock, if the top part comes off, the middle tube has no water in it so is exposed to the air.

I have seen it happen myself and I don't use them now. I prefer the older style S shaped ones although to be honest I tend to use blow off tubes more these days.

Although as you said, it is not absolutely necessary, or at least not necessary once your yeast takes off and since it is at this stage that the problem occurs then its nothing to worry about. Although I can just imagine a little fly or spider falling in. Yum.
