As mentioned, it is not the customers problem about the retailers rental cost issue. The Retailer chooses the premises entirely at their own risk. If they are naive enough to rent the most expensive premises, its their problem.
The customer will buy wherever its cheaper, like it or not.
Hope you remember that when you have to drive miles to the back of beyond when you need milk/bread/cigs/beer or whatever you consider to be essentials.
Cause that's whats going to happen if people continue to ignore their local shops.0 -

Not just on prices but also proximity. They currently have around 350 stores throughout the UK.
I made the trip up north a few times and it was great.

Are you trying to insinuate that if Walmart trade in Ireland under the ASDA brand that you expect the prices to be the same as NI????

They will be as close as currency fluctuations allow - None of the existing retailers who trade North and South are as close as everybody would like but people forget that they are different countries and different currencies.0 -

I did indeed read your comment and that's what I was asking you about. Why would you think Walmart offered better value than Tesco in the U.K.? This doesn't seem based on any actual research on your part, no offence. In price baskets done by the government and by the companies themselves, the difference in pricing at any one time is not massive by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it more or less depends on the week which of them is cheaper.0 -

The core root of this is the cost differential (which continues to be ignored by some Irish Retailers) - value for money.
Being in the EU and having open markets keeps prices down. You may not like this because it makes you work. People are entitled to spend where they like because this is a DEMOCRACY. The same for people in Germany buying from Poland etc.0 -

Yes the EU is an open market and consumers are free to shop where they want BUT comparing prices with other countries that have different costs/wages/social infrastructure is not highlighting people to a rip off in this country.
This forum is for alerting consumers to an actual rip off

There are plenty of retailers/publicans in this country that are cutting prices and doing the best they can to stay in business. Overheads such as rent/ESB/warehousing etc is for the most part non negotiable so the next thing cut is payroll and staffing.
Do you really think that a shop or pub would close and/or go into liquidation rather than doing everything they can to stay open?0 -

Your telling me that as I was born in the North I am not Irish (I couldn't be if I was born in a "different country" as you put it).
Ireland is made up of Four provinces, one of which is Ulster which include the counties Antrim,Armagh, Derry,Down,Fermanagh and Tyrone (so has Ireland 4 provinces or three and a bit?)

It has when someone compares prices north and south, and follows that up by claiming they are two different countries. I was merely disagreeing with borderlinemeath, I dont see Ireland as two seperate countries, but as one Island of Ireland.
And finally, here is an extract from our ammended constitution.
Substitution of new Articles 2 and 3

g32, you seem to have missed/avoided my question in a previous post. If the exchage rate goes down to the 64p/1€ it was a while back, will you then accuse retailers in the North of being a rip off even though the sterling price has not changed?.
The stores in the North are selling beer/wine etc at below cost, they are loss leaders for other items in the store. The new Govnt in UK has indicated that they will ban this practice as it encourages excessive alcohol consumption. Put simply for you, the stores in Enniskillen will be forced to increase their prices soon. Also there is a VAT increase on the way in the UK as revenue needs to increase their take.
Lastly, I think for the sake of this discussion and to maybe prove your point versus those who disagree with you, you might consider posting the general sector of your own profession, I will research the wage rates between it and those in similar sectors in others countries and post it here. We can then assess the % difference and apply that to the % difference in the cost of some household goods/alcohol.0 -

There were various times of the year that SuperValu seemed to have across-the-board price increases, and I see that hasn't changed, so I think Rip-off Ireland is alive and kicking.
Yeah, SuperValu must be the one of the worst of the lot. I was working in one of their shops a few years ago, and the day they've open Aldi in the area, they've put up their prices and said it was due to the fact that their products are better. Don't see the difference myself, apart from the fact that a weeks shopping in Aldi comes to about the same amount as one dinner from SuperValu. :mad:0 -

I previously mentioned that many people have stopped buying alcohol for good, others cut back and now buy from discount retailers like Lidl. Either way, the numbers buying alcohol in the 26 counties will likely never recover to the levels seen up until the cross-border shopping. Asda will always find ways around that to sell cheaper.0 -
