Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Creaking BB (Shimano Hollowtech)

I have a creaking noise from the BB when "out of the saddle" pedalling. I suspect the bearings and/or cups are worn, but before I go stripping it down, just wondering if I'm wasting my time trying to fix this? (The bike is 3 years old). Should I simply get new BB Cups and replace?.

    Any Thoughts?

    tks

P.s. The BB is a Shimano Hallowtech? triple chainset (no sniggering please).

Caveat: creaks always sound like they're coming from the BB. Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not.

Hollowtech BBs are not serviceable, but they aren't expensive either. Just get a new one. Then you'll probably find out it the headset/pedals/rearhub/knees or whatever.

Tighten the cups and cranks, when the cups are not in tight enough they creak, adding grease to the threads helps too. :)

From my experience the bottom bracket "will tick" on the same spot when putting power down on the pedals usually a sign the bearings are on the way out, i get about 5000km out of a shimano bottom bracket before they tick haha and then they get bined
