German authorities closed the Oder River to shipping for a third consecutive day as flood waters from heavy rain in neighboring Poland rose to disaster levels. A police order closing the river on Germany’s eastern border from Ratzdorf, where the Neisse River meets the Oder, to almost the Baltic Sea coast remains in effect today, Norbert Gritzka, a spokesman for the Federal Waterways and Shipping Agency in Eberswalde, Germany, said in a phone interview.

Water levels at the eastern German city of Frankfurt an der Oder reached 5.33 meters (17.5 feet) at 7:15 a.m. Berlin time, a rise of one meter in 26 hours and more than 3 meters above average levels since 2006, according to the waterways office’s website.

Heavy rain in Poland swelled the Vistula River to its highest level in 160 years, forcing thousands of Poles from their homes and closing roads and schools. The Vistula and the Oder broke or soaked through levees and flooded the Polish medieval cities of Krakow, Sandomierz and Wroclaw.
