Telecom Italia launched a pilot project in Rome that will connect 1,000 households in the district of Prati with fibre optic cable, enabling internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps. By end-2010, the number of users of ultra broadband services in the city will grow to 80,000, mainly in the areas covered by the Belle Arti, Appia and Pontelungo exchanges. For 2012, the goal is to have a total of 350,000 clients in the Greater Rome area. The initiative is part of Telecom Italia's plan to build the NGAN (Next Generation Access Network) which will make available fibre connections to about 1.3 million customers in 13 cities by 2012, rising to more than 10 million in 2016.
