Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Entry level road bike

    Hey guys, I was just looking for a little bit of advice (sorry, it is another which bike thread!). I had been looking into getting a road bike to start doing some cycling beyond the normal commuter run and was looking to come in at the lower end of the spectrum.

    I have read some good reviews of the Giant Defy 4, but have seen in the last few days that Halfords have money off their Carrera bikes at the moment, including the Virtuoso and Ltd Edition TDF road bikes. I was wondering are these actually better value than the likes of the Defy 4 and which would ye think would be the better option?

    If you are starting off then the Defy would still be a better choice, though truth be told the spec is not arguably different between the Carrera Ltd and the Defy 4.

    What the Defy does have in it's favour is that is has a triple chainset which unlike the Carrera will give you an extra set of 8 gears for climbs until you're strong enough not to need them.

    Now, as is the tradition with this forum, I'll invite you to save a wee bit more and go for something a bit more expensive. The Giant Defy 3.5 is not radically different from the 4 in terms of drivechain spec BUT it does have a carbonfiber fork which will help to take the edge off the road buzz through the bars.

    If you can see yourself doing long rides (maybe 50km+) and if this will be a bike to do you for a couple of years it could be worth considering going that extra bit more for the 3.5.

    Edit: also forgot to say - when buying a bike, unless you're up to the job of servicing it yourself, do consider where you'll be bringing it back to for it's servicing (real bike shop vs Halfords)
