cannot format memory stick

i have a 16gb hp v135w, have googled the problem, edit the reg, tried advice on diskpart and format through dos,
tried in disk management, low level format etc all to no avail

yet the drive is still saying it is write protected?
to note there is no physical tab on these memory sticks

i am at my wits end on this 1 anybody got any ideas?
tried various pcs win xp and win7

have you attempted to format it from command prompt

open a command prompt and enter the following

format g: /q /fs:ntfs

replace the g: with that ever your drive letter is.

edit: never mind i reread your post and you already tried this.

yes indeed i tried both fat32 and ntfs in dos
its very unusual i have never seen this happen b4

have you tried the usb on another computer to confirm its not a direct problem with the usb rather than the pc.

indeed i have in fact went to 3 pcs, now one with linux mint on it just to see as well still says write protected

ok i think i may have found a solution.

1) open command prompt and type "diskpart"
2) type "list volume"
3) type "select volume x" where x is your usb's volume.
4) type "attributes volume clear readonly" and "attributes disk clear readonly"
5) exit.

Give it a go.

had tried that also earlier, thats why i say i am so confused it certainily is a puzzler

if you type in "attribute volume" and "attribute disk" do they return that they are readonly?

got is sorted hardly worth the effort i went to but i done it through gparted, may seem extreme but mem stick now working fine

maybe the file on the stick process already when to insert it too, try to end process.

+1 for Gparted. It's very good. I had similar problem with current partitions. Couldn't do anything in Windows.
