Zeek 12 No.4 is The Lost Weekend.

Okay, so all these films won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay:

The Bridge on the River Kwai, Out of Africa, Dances with Wolves, The Lost Weekend, Gigi, Midnight Cowboy and Ordinary People

They were all adapted from novels or novellas, apart from Out of Africa, which was adapted from three sources, one of which was an autobiography.
I really don't know what the link is beyond the fact that they all have the Oscars for Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director.
It can't be that they have these without having won any acting Oscars, as Ray Milland won for The Lost Weekend and Timothy Hutton won for Ordinary People.

    ???

    Correct on #4, well spotted.

You're right (in a roundabout way), the link is simply that they are all winners of the Best Picture Oscar and were adapted from Novels/books. Although the Out of Africa source material was a bit more complicated so apologies if that one threw you off the scent!

Bit of a random guess....is 4. Wise Blood?
That looks a bit like HD Stanton on the ground

No. It's not Harry Dean Stanton, I'm afraid and that particular film couldn't be more different from Wise Blood!
Despite the downbeat image, it's from a 1972 comedy.

I'm sure this has been discussed but the imcdb.com images are way too easy to google. I've been stumped by a few that I knew I knew so googled the image to see. Didn't post the answer's obviously, but it is possible. One's people have reuploaded to Photobucket seem to be immune to googling.

Is it that each film features TWO actors that appeared in Bond films?

The Denholm Elliott one is Cuba, with Sean Connery and Walter Gottell, both of whom were in several Bond films.
Topol and Max Von Sydow are both in Flash Gordon, and each were in a Bond film (if we count Never Say Never Again).
Ten Little Indians: Christopher Lee (uncredited) and Shirley Eaton.

No. Nothing to do with 2 or more actors in each or any Bond necessarily, although the Bond link is definitely on the right track. Cuba was already identified.

It doesn't apply to all of them, but it does get even more coincidental, because both Yaphet Kotto (Live and Let Die) and Ursula Andress (Dr. No) are in 4 for Texas.

Anyway, 8 is Peter Sellers (Casino Royale) in Ghost in the Noonday Sun.

Any ideas yet on the theme?

Not a clue. It's certainly not obviously Oscar-related. There are a lot of potential possibilities. I did think initially it might be to do with celebrity offspring (Michael being the son of Kirk Douglas, Danny being the son of John Huston), but I had to abandon that when nothing else leapt out.
Then I thought it might be that every film had a cast member that appeared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (Brad Dourif, Ian McKellan), but I disregarded that too.

Delbert is closer than he thinks - it is offspring and Oscar related but a bit more obscure than the names he mentioned. Look deeper my boy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,772 ✭✭✭delbertgrady

The films all feature actors or actresses who have a parent that won an Oscar for either acting or directing.

2 is Elvis and Annabelle, starring Max Minghella, son of Anthony, Oscar winner for Best Director for The English Patient.
9 is The Babysitter's Club with Schuylar Fisk, daughter of Sissy Spacek, Best Actress Oscar winner for Coal Miner's Daughter.

Joely Richardson is in I'll Do Anything: her mother Vanessa Redgrave won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Julia.
The two fathers I've said already (Kirk Douglas [honorary] and John Huston) have Oscars.

Surely it's no more complicated than that?

2024 Gigs and Events: David Suchet, Depeche Mode, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smile, Pixies, Liam Gallagher John Squire/Jake Bugg, Kacey Musgraves (x2), Olivia Rodrigo, Mitski, Muireann Bradley, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Girls Aloud, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Rewind Festival, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Henry Winkler, P!nk, Pearl Jam/Richard Ashcroft, Taylor Swift/Paramore, Suede/Manic Street Preachers, Muireann Bradley, AC/DC, Deacon Blue/Altered Images, The The, blink-182, Coldplay, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Nick Lowe, David Gilmour, ABBA Voyage, St. Vincent, Public Service Broadcasting, Crash Test Dummies, Cassandra Jenkins.

2 and 10 are Elvis and Annabelle / Babysitters Club.

Very close on the link, it's actually Franchesca Scorcese, Max Minghella, Kimber Eastwood, Max Nichols, Mason Lee, Amy Brooks, Catherine Wyler, Nicole Fosse, Christian Gibson and Annie Costner all had roles (some very small) in these movies and their Dad's Martin, Anthony, Clint, Mike, Ang, James L, William, Bob, Mel and Kevin all won an Oscar as Best Director.

Use the names above as the clues to close off 3 and 7.

    3. Freeway Maniac (Kimber Eastwood as "Girl Camper")
    7. The Skeptic aka The Haunting of Bryan Becket.

    WAY too obscure for me.

8 is Monty Python's Life of Brian.
    I'd recognise that spaceship anywhere.
    Excellent anorak question.

Yeah, you're right. Only one of the bunch that's not a sci-fi!
