I bought a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 130T the other week and yesterday was my first chance at getting it out there. Myself and my wife headed the whole 15 minute drive to Lough Ennell near Mullingar to break her in.
I had not been Kayaking since I was a teen so about 15 years ago.

It was a beautiful warm and sunny day. Even the water was warm. We loaded a picnic set on to the boat and off we went sticking close to the shore while we got used to it. I found quickly I was still a pretty strong paddler so grew in confidence. After we stopped for lunch we went for a longer trip exploring the islands and eventually I decided to leave the shore and cut right out through the middle of the lake to what I believed was Belvedere house and this turned out to be exactly what it was. I reckon I did about 6 or 7 km and felt pretty good about it.

Can't wait to get out again.

sounds good. well done. make sure to keep safety first. make a route plan and leave it with someone ashore. make sure your rescue and self-rescue skills are practiced in a safe location. i am sure you have all this covered, so just saying it so it may help other readers. hope you have a good summer with your new kayak.

    Hi irishlostboy,

I will be purchasing a touring kayak withing the next couple of months and was going to visit Lough Ennell for a paddle. Where is the best place to launch from.

    Tnaks.

Unless he has gone to Lough Ennel perhaps I might be able to give you some advice.
I have however only gone there once with the boat but I think where I went was perfect.

If you are coming from Mullingar take the road leading to Belvedere house. You will come to a turn to the right with a sign for Lough Ennel. Go down this road. There will be a turn to the left but ignore this one as it leads to a place were swans are in abundance and it is pretty gooey. Keep going and take the next left signposted Lough Ennel. Keep going as this leads all the way to the lake and there is a large car park. You should end up where the google map link shows below (I think). Just bring the kayak in to the water and away you go.

If it is a sit in though, there is no dock to launch from and you might have to find somewhere else.
