Their bubble hasn't really burst yet, so probably not a good idea to buy there for a few years.

For example, the average property price in Barcelona is about 500k, but the average wage is under 24k!

Be very wary. Lots of scams and pitfall - official, semi-official and very unofficial.

Some parts of Spain are doing ok price wise and others are faring absolutely awfully. The banks are trying to offload huge amounts of property along the Mediterranean coast because there is way too much of it, it was poorly planned, chunks of it are illegal, it was overpriced and nobody wants it now that the market has crashed. Areas around cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, where there is an indigenous demand, are not in anything like the same mess.

If you want to keep an eye on what is going on in the Spanish market I would advise checking out the Spanish Property Insight site run by Mark Stucklin, there is a lot of independent advice there for someone who doesn't know much about the Spanish property market.

Prices on the islands (Canaries and Balearics) are not at all indicative of prices on the mainland, they are essentially separate markets in their own right.
