The first in the series was released 1996 so it just about retro, but this is really a tribute. Everyone needs to play this game at some point.

The newest iteration, Nova, is the only dual release for Windows and MAC and has the best engine by far, especially the graphics. This is really and truely the best 2d space game ever made. An RPG, a trading game, a space combat game, an incredibly engaging narrative, social satire, politics. The works.

This is what Elite could have been as far as I'm concerned. Download it and give it a spin, you will not regret it whatsoever. You will never have played anything like it. The replay value is beyond immense. It will literally eat your life.

Start with EV nova. Override is a bit pants tbh, and you can get total conversion plugs for EV 1 or 2 for free that use the EVN engine which is the best way to play.

Looks good. It's a genre I've wanted to get into but haven't really gotten round to it, have Starflight for the MD that I haven't played yet and Infinite Space (similar I guess) for the DS which is high on my backlog list. Might give this a shot though if I can play it on my macbook.

Believe me, no console game holds a candle to EV:Nova. Each of the 6 or so storylines takes at least 15+ hours to clear, and they are linked in together with mission and plot dependent weapons, ships and licences.

Something like 15 governments, all of which you can affiliate with, plus merchant castes, pirates (cheeky but moral) and renegades (sociopathic xenophobes) with their own unique weapons, outfits, systems and missions. It is COMPLETELY open-ended with no notion of linear progression outside of the major plots, and storylines are dependent on a huge amount of factors like ship type, weaponry/outfits, cargo, and kill rating. You can also betray about 4 governments half-way through the storyline.

On top of that, ships will attack or retreat depending on their AI, they all have different styles of engagement and the major government warships or partol ships will hyper in reinforcements. You can plunder everything off them if you disable them, capture them for use as your own ship or force them into servitude as escorts depending on your amount of crew vs. theirs. Similarly, you can demand tribute from planets and governments if you can take on and defeat their defence militia, and they pay by the day.

Also, there's a major storyline (just about erring on the nice side of cliched) regarding a bunch of Irish mercenaries called the Wild Geese which is pretty damn good. The Pre-Ambles are absolutely incredible and give you a huge amount of background on the story, constituting nearly a novel by themselves.

This is about as good as narrative-based games get.
