First Build..Advice on some Components..

So I've decided to build...I'm fairly clueless when it comes to this (even though I've been working in Programming for 10 years:o )

The PC will be mainly used for Programming (nothing too heavy, just Eclipse/Java development, no 3d stuff!) and I will run one game on it, MS Flight Simulator (maybe the 'X' version but definitely the version before that).

Anyway, can someone recommend a graphics card and power supply for the spec below:
My budget for graphics card is max €150 and the same for PSU.

Processor: Intel Core i5 750 / 2.66 GHz
Mobo: Asus P7P55D (Link)

I would spend more on the GPU and less on the PSU. Flight sim is a bit like the original Crysis, requires hardware not avaliable at time of release to play it at max.

yikes, that was above my budget! I'm not a massive gamer and it's the older version of Flight Sim I play but yes, I suppose there is a chance I will upgrade to the 'X' version once I build this PC.

Not from what I was told by people that play flight sim. Sky is the limit if you want to play the game to it's full potential. Sure you can run it with lower powered cards but as I am told all the time "It is not a game, it is a simulator" :rolleyes:

Flight sim has a wide range of settings you can play on I suspect so most cards will run it. Hopefully there will be some flight sim players around here that will be able to advise you better on what cards have worked for them.

yes, I agree with you, the Flight Sim 'X' version is very heavy on resources but for now I'm happy with the 2004 version which ran pretty well on my HP Pavilion Laptop which was a weak enough laptop really.

But yes, I understand what you are saying, in order to achieve the best 'sim' experience one needs the best graphics card etc. I think I'm trying to find a happy compromise between performance and price! I'm not too concerned if the shadows of the aircraft are not perfectly rendered on the water below:)

A 5770 is pretty much the sweet spot.

A tri/quad core with a mid-high end modern graphics card is more than capable of playing FSX at very acceptable levels

An i5 750 and Asus P7H57D-V EVO is what i currently run in my home machine with the 5770 and it runs everything on full.
Great card and highly recommended.
