So they have started putting up the same barriers and fences used for the Volvo Ocean race down in the docks, very exciting stuff especially cos the weather is cracking at the moment, and hopefully it will last.

Does anyone have any map or info on what will be in the docks and salthill over the week and other details? I felt the need to open this thread as a similar one to the VOR one i opened last year!

    Some info on their website

Mick’s live performances have already achieved legendary status, The RTÉ Guide once described his lyrics as "so personal they seemed carved from his very soul". Don't miss out on the chance to see one of Ireland's leading talents in the unique setting of the Galway Docks. 8.30pm, Saturday June 5

Emmet Scanlan and What the Good Thought
In recent years the band have gone from strength to strength both in Ireland and abroad, playing numerous prestigious festivals and touring internationally. 7.30pm, Saturday June 5

    Supermodel Twins
Hailing from Limerick, the five-piece 'Supermodel Twins' have an unerring, breezy power-pop sensibility that combines intelligent lyrics with infectious harmonies. This is a programme of the weeks happenings. The stage seems to be the Dun Aengus side of the docks this time round.

Here's a link to the map of the docks: http://www.aroundireland.org/dp/race_village.pdf

As foxy said, things are coming together
    Tents being erected
    Stage being erected
    Superstock Truck HQ has arrived
Car park being fenced off over towards Bow Waves

I'm putting my boats in the Docks tonight as a base for the week, can't wait :D I shouldn't be hard to spot... follow the Buckfast oil slick :pac:

    IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER WOOHOO!

There's also a full PA system installed along the prom out as far as Blackrock

Ah-Ha! They were just putting up the framing when I was there today. Nice to see things coming together. Really looking forward to it.

So whats the story with the boats themselves?

Thinking of bringing the kids down to Galway tomorrow afternoon (before the weather deteriorates too much), will there be powerboats on display in the harbour or would you see more out Salthill direction? Park+Ride is on again from the racecourse, but not very useful if you want to head out towards Salthill.

Pretty low key build-up I must admit, certainly compared to the Volvo Ocean Race.

they had signs in salthill yesterday that part of the car park there would be blocked off for the powerboat (on the main stretch of the prom). Salthill would be perfect if the weather is good - however I think its not going to be so good, which means the docks would be a good place to hang out - more sheltered. But for viewing I would have to say Salthill/Grattan.

    should be a good weekend.

barricades going up now on Mainguard Street for the Little Havana Festival.

    Excellent:D:D:D:D

Hope the weather holds up. I know nothing about boats but if the craic around Galway is half as good as it was for the Volvo it will be great. Fair play to all involved in bringing it to Galway. Looking forward to the racing on the bay.

Boats, Fives, Latin festival,,,,If the weather is anyway kind it should be a great weekend.

I'm going on holiday today for a week. Looking forward to the holiday but I'm a bit disappointed to miss the power boat race :(. Never even thought of the power boat race when booking my holiday; if I had, I might have chosen a different week to go away.

the little havana festival is now in full swing. Music blaring from mainguard street - wouldn't ya think they would give the poor workers a break and wait until at least 5 p .m. to start - so that they can have a chance to order in their havana club cocktails. sounds brilliant tho and the sun is splitting the stones.

Things are starting to get going, quite a bit of activity this morning. Took a wander around with the camera and these are few.

Anyone taken the tour on the French naval boats?
Was it interesting enough to queue up for?

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

I'm just back from the docks, lots of people and food stalls. The new main stage in on the Dun Aengus side.
Will go back later for crepes, yum.

We got on board the French boats, interesting enough but not exactly fascinating. A few of the sailors had basic English to offer some explanations.

Great atmosphere down on on the quayside, you could call it Volvo Ocean Race-Lite - still plenty of overpriced food stalls though. No sign of the actual power boats though, one disadvantage of them being based in Salthill.

Combined with the weather coming up trumps and the Cuban festival in Cross St. / Mainguard St., Galway was a great place to be today. Even Bucky Plaza looked great in the sunshine, not much sign of any yobs either, just a few stag parties getting started.

Just in the door, great day had to be fair. It was nice to mix between the two festivals.

Back again tomorrow at 3pm for Crystal Swing...

A few from the 150 race. Was in a different position at that time so not as good as the first lot, boats further away and smaller. I'll know where to stand tomorrow.

Might go down to this again on Monday - does anyone know the schedule for then and where would be the best spot to see the boats on their way out for the start of the Round-Ireland race?
