Later today, rain will turn heavy in southern counties, the heavy rain spreading gradually northeastwards into most of Munster, Leinster and east Ulster this evening and early tonight, with a risk of thundery downpours.

Might be a few rumbles for some in the east midlands and the northeast this evening.

Horrible afternoon here, very showery and blustery here for the past hour. Also quite humid. No thunder reported however. I see Met Eireann have showers and drizzly rain forecast for south Leinster and Munster but so far today, all of Leinster and adjoining counties have had showery conditions. Currently it's moving into NI even. Even their 3 hour forecast is quite off the mark, the heavier rain should be marked 120 km further north.

No they are correct that is just showers and it is actually quite a nice day here with 21c and a bit of milky sunshine and no wind at all for once, pity about milky sunshine as per usual northern ireland weather though *sigh*

Excuse me? Are you able to even understand your own posts? Did you know that weather forecasts can be wrong for some parts of Ireland, but remain correct for others?

PLEASE STOP mentioning Coleraine at every chance you have. Especially if you don't have the attention span to read even a small post properly. This is the Thunderstorm thread, not the "Latest in Coleraine: July 2010" thread.

12Z GFS is picking up on what DE mentioned last night regarding Monday. LI of -2 and 300-400 j/kg CAPE for the north midlands, could bring a few rumbles.

Tuesday not looking as thundery on this run as previous ones, but Wednesday and Thursday have good thunderstorm potential.

Lets hope the other variables are there to kick start some good convection.

If that Thursday chart came off I think we would be sure to see good convection and thunderstorms.

Plenty of moisture, 800-900 CAPE, -4 Lifted Index, 16C dp.

The only problem is it will probably change by Thursday! :pac:

Still waiting for at least one half decent storm here this year so hopefully not!

Here's the Portlaoise sounding for 15Z Thursday, showing good boundary level moisture, unstable lapse rates, and ELT around -45°C, good for thunderstorms. Wind shear is weak however, but it does increase later on in the afternoon/evening, and with mid - upper levels drying out, convection coud be sustained until after dark. Most activity in the midlands and southwest.

Agreed Depp Easterly. Just noticed the date, it's almost 25 years since the "big one" in 1985. Will we ever see it's likes again? Fingers crossed for later this week anyway.

Reasonably heavy rain outside now, no thunder though

  • Registered Users Posts: 753 ✭✭✭Timistry

We had heavy rain in kenmare for about 15 min between 10 and 11 pm. No thunder or lightening to report though. We are the rain capital of ireland but never get snow etc (aka the good stuff) lol:p

    BTW, a tropical 18.2c here.

The last 2 GFS runs have backed off on Thursday's thundery potential completely but still looks good for Wednesday.

GFS has really upgraded the storm potential for hear on Wednesday. Two stroms in as many weeks , two good to be true?
