Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What do people around here think of LED? Is it worth the premium one pays for them? Pros and cons against LCD? Husband saw one in a shop and fell in love with the clarity of the image... the Samsung one, to be precise.

    Thanks in advance.

LED v LCD is not really a question of different display technologies.

LED is LCD , the LED part refers to the backlight only , its still an LCD TV and still has the same advantages and disadvantages of any LCD TV.

Samsung were pulled up by the ASA ( advertising standards authority ) for implying that it was a new screen technology , its not.

    http://www.asa.org.uk/Complaints-and-ASA-action/Adjudications/2009/8/Samsung-Electronics-UK-Ltd/TF_ADJ_46783.aspx

Advantages of an LED backlight , well there is something to be said for local area dimming. It may or may not seem to enhance the image on some sets. Some say it actually causes more problems than it solves in that the uniformity of the lighting suffers and you dont get a consistent image across the screen.

Would I pay the premium thats being asked for it ? No , absolutely not , there are non LED lit LCD TV's that do just as good a job if not better.

The one thing you should watch out for are the new edge-lit LED LCD TVs, as they often suffer from brighter blacks in comparison to back-lit LED LCD TVs, CCFL backlit LCD TVs and Plasma TVs. Edge-lit LED LCDs are all the range by manufacturers, such as Samsung, Sony and Panasonic, as it means they can offer much slimmer screens which people tend to like the look of better.

You can see what I'm referring to in the review of the new Samsung UE46C8000, the Panasonic TX-L42D45 and from the below quote taken from the latter's review conclusion.

Concluding reviews of LED sidelit LCD displays is somewhat difficult, because above all, they are an effort in improving aesthetics first, and picture quality second (if at all). Whilst the buying public appears to be enthusiastic about the novelty of ultra-slim displays, when placed in the corner of a room, their aesthetic benefits are unlikely to be too visible.
