I've done a Mystery Day or Role Playing Games for Kids parties before. It can be an all day or overnight event. Like one of those "Murder Mystery" weekends for Adults, but toned down obviously. Have them all playing parts and everything. Keeps them very busy, can be done at home on the cheap and is really good fun (better than 30 minutes of quasar anyway).

I think you can google role playing templates which will provide all the rules and characters etc.... basically do all the planning for you.

What are the usual things you have done, and then we could suggest things?

not sure what area you are in but would you consider a treasure hunt in a wood ? the few that come to mind are
    currabinny ( carrigaline )
    garryduff ( rochestown )
    farran ( ovens ).

we ve done it in currabinny. laid clues for them. organised them into teams, gave them all a packed picnic each and all ate together at the top of the wood where there is structure called the summer house. they loved it . did it for a boy and girls party.
also did swim parties. local pool, dance class after etc.

I was in Milanos one day & there was a party on. All the kids were wearing chef hats & were making their own pizza. Looked like they were having a great laugh. I thought that was a good idea.

Silversprings hotel do parties. Hour playing games(chasing, soccer, tennis etc.) hour swimming, hour food (pizza n chips).
Its great for the kids, but some adults will need to go into the pool. We normally have two of us for about 12 kids.
Not sure the cost, but you could ring them if your interested. Its something different and its active!

Just a tip if you are booking a puppet show, ask if the voices are done live, there are franchise puppet shows going around with pre recorded voices and therefore there will be no interactiveness with the audience! You need to have a show that can engage the audience, this cant be done with recorded dialog.
