Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think Che might have done it. I know a few lads who go from the Tralee side fairly regularly, but they all reckon from Castlemaine side up is waaaaay worse.

Its actually only about 4 kms from my place but I've never been bothered to do it, plenty of other hills just as close but with better roads.

Why, are you thinking of giving it a go this weekend ?

The road is alright, better than the Priest Leap I reckon, but hard work getting down from it.

I was going to do the 2 Ballaghs at w/e. But never heard of Short mt and it looks intriguing.
Reckon that gradient on MMR and ridewithgps are worst than Priests Leap but 1km shorter.

    Not sure. Maybe another time.

Actually you can shag off and do it on your own, no way am I doing it from the Castlemaine side ... there is good stretch of it at 19% Ave !!

No wonder they all do it from the other side

Here is another nasty bastard over the same mountain a bit further down the road.

I am doing this tomorrow http://beta.mapmyride.com/route/detail/17952886/
takes in the short mountain Tralee-Castlemaine. After 170km it could be painful! I guess it will count as a warm up for the W200.

I do this every time i go home its a tough one but i do prefer going from the castlemaine side but you would want at least a 25 on the back but you can go up it in a 23.

Savage. I would join you but I have signed up for some Chinese Water Torture.
That is probably a bit tougher than Wicklow. Enjoy. Tomorrow supposed to be only good day of w/e. I will be cycling in the rain on Sunday.

I've gone over them both from the castlemaine side when I got my bike first, wasn't fit enough :eek:to cycle all the way so walked bits as needed.
The decents make up for the struggle up and the surfaces are good.
This was in the middle of last summer
Had to walk more on Caherconree camp route,
The gap of Dunloe, Molls gap and the Conor pass are a lot more managable in comparison

There should be way more sportifs in Kerry. You could have about 8 tough courses and never repeat the same climbs.
Way too many rides in Wicklow use the same basic routes.

The only reason that is because Cork are just not used to winning stuff and with me there i bring the kerry way to the team

The All-Ireland Hill Climb Championship being hosted by the Tralee Bicycle Club is using the Short Mountain from the Tralee Side. Saturday 10th July 2010.

    http://www.traleebicycleclub.com/allirelandhillclimb.htm

Also our sportive on the 15th August 2010 takes in the Conor Pass twice with a spin around Slea Head too. More details on website including event flyer.

What a route that would be - Tralee, Conor Pass, Dingle, Slay Head, Dingle, Inch, Short Mountain, Tralee. Word would get around about that.

Very similar to our (the Chain Gang CC) Blasket Blast route in September.

Couldn't bring it up the south side of Short mountain though - too much to throw onto the end of a 150km route. Possibly suitable for adding to the end of the 110km Conor Pass Challenge - maybe next year...

Yeah word would get around, Defibrilator Sportive ! Trust me, on the Kingdom Challenge, Aug 15th, facing up the Conor Pass for a second time, after 100 kms and Slea Head with its headwinds and dirty kick at Murreagh, it aint exactly a cakewalk.

Che is spot on about going up the south side of the short mountain with that distance in the legs, would be like throwing in Seskin at the very end of the SK

So put 2 dates in your calender, Aug 15th Kingdom Challenge and Sept 18th Blasket Blast, 2 of the most spectacular sportives of the year, and if you're still feeling fit/suicidal, you can always take a detour via the 'Short Mountain' on the final stretch :)
