Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not really, he's been poor this season and King should have been ahead of him anyway.

Gutted for him...injury nightmare for him this season topped off by this.

    Who's their captain now?

    ....didn't realise Drogba was out!

I think having Gerrard as Captain is a good thing because I didn't see Rio playing every game considering he couldn't string a few games together for United. So consistancy will be good for them.

But you've gotta feel bad for Rio. He looks after himself and conducts himself well and his injuries are slaughtering his morale at this stage I'd say. I think I'd be in tears if I were in his position.

    it is a blow.

he's their first choice centre-half. yes he's been injured and arguably out of form, but he's still a top top player on his day.

it will take a great effort from King, Carragher, and (i assume!) Dawson, to cover that, since none of them are particularly experienced in being 1st choice CB for their country.

for this reason, i can see Upson maybe getting the nod.

    Heskey the donkey!

    No he doesnt.

Ah come on! Thats not fair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

I really don't see Upson getting it. With his experience, I suspect Carragher will get the nod.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

    Heskey the donkey!

Was apparently a perfectly innocent tackle, wasn't even a 50:50.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

The big issue is that Ferdinand is the only real sweeper type CB they have. Terry, King, Upson and Carragher all have a tendency to get sucked in close to their man and can leave an awful lot of space behind them. Not to mention they are all bit slow. Ferdinand's pace and positioning means he's great at compensating for that (Vidic does the same thing for United a lot so he has lots of experience at it). It'll be interesting to see who Capello starts with.

Dawson is flying to SA tonight say SSN. I feel bad for Rio but tbh I wasn't sure he would make it through the tournament anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

King is the obvious choice imo, but his injury status puts him at another problem.

Frankly, England's defence now only has Cole and Terry who are really at the highest levels. From the strongest part of their squad a year ago, they really have been hit by injuries.

Good man Emile, justifying that selection already.

Yea Walcott would have just bounced back off him .

    It's a pity.

As much as I hate Drogba, I want to see the best players perform in the WC. It would have been nice to see him go up against Brazil and Portugal.

It's also a pity about Ferdinand. I didn't give England a hope anyway, but this is going to be fuel for all their "what could have been" stories and excuses.

  • Registered Users Posts: 787 ✭✭✭Roaster

    No he doesnt.

Just a pity he likes missing the odd piss test...

You've got to feel for any player who misses out on a World Cup through an injury like this or not making the final cut. Most people wouldn't feel sorry for them because of the huge wages they're on, but for most of these guys this is their boyhood dream and something they've worked towards for their whole lives. for that to be taken away at the last minute must be crushing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,665 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Indeed. But I wonder what Stephen Ireland's boyhood dream was?

That's a massive blow for Engerland's World Cup hopes.

Despite the fact that Rio has had an inconsistent and injury ridden season for United, he has been there and done it before internationally. This was to be his 4th World Cup and that it irreplaceable.

IMO, England are lucky to have King to step in for Rio, but there is no sugar coating the loss of your captain a week before the tournament begins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭An Citeog

I guess I'm not seeing the funny side to this like a lot of other posters. This is a guy who's been a top class player throughout his career and it would've been his first time captaining his country at a World Cup, his last ever World Cup. Can't help but feel a bit gutted for him tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

Its a big blow for them, hes by far there better centre back[better than terry] when hes at his best. However, it was doubtful if he would have been at his best if he played, considering the season hes had.
Nice to see Dawson get in, should have been in there from the start, he has been the outstanding centre back this season.
I can see Capello going for experience over ability and playing Carra centre half, would be a serious blunder though!

To sit on a substitutes bench with an elastic band making little bullets from £50 notes, firing them at hairier bullies

Feel really sorry for Rio, he's had such a terrible time of it this season with injuries. That's surely it for him and World Cups.
Portugal must be most pleased with the news that Drogba is out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,034 ✭✭✭pavb2

I'd say it's a minor setback & at least they can still call in a replacement rather than if the tournament had started.

For me Rooney,Gerrard & Lampard have to perform for England to do any good, just reminded of all shots Lampard had at Euro 08

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭kakee

Dont forget Rio didn't make too many apperances for United this season. Michael Dawson has been brilliant and is a better defender than Jamie Carragher or Matthew Upson any day. He totally deserves to go to Africa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,282 ✭✭✭Glico Man

Terrible luck for him but he has had an injury ravaged season. His replacements aren't anywhere near his standards

What was that Duran Duran song??

"His name is Rio and he's watching from the stands"

    :pac:
