How to get a website started

I am planning on setting up a website of the type that matches people with different resources.. (like the way eBay matches buyers and sellers or expertsexchange, etc) So the only way to make it work is for there to be lots of users already on it.

    My question is this:
How do these kinds of sites get started? Like no one would bother selling their stuff on eBay if it didn't already have a large population of buyers or vice versa, so how would they get their first big installment of members?

    Any ideas? Thanks

This doesn't sound like it has any legs (commercially anyway) as there are many similar marketplace websites already.

As to how they start, well supply and demand...

First mover advantage (or whatever it's called)

eBay has been around for a very long time and they basically carved out the market for themselves

Getting lots of users quickly is NOT easy

You'd need a web strategy that ties in with your overall business objectives. Have you got a strategy bedded down or is this merely an idea at this stage?
