Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

RAW And laptop questions

    Hi guys,

    following on from some of my previous posts and criticism given to me over my photos, I've began to start taking photos in RAW format.

    Now, I've a few questions.

    1. What applications (Free if possible to begin with) can I use to process and format the RAW files?

    2. I currently use a netbook to store all my photos, I've two other laptops and a desktop at home as well but I prefer the netbook as it's small and manageable. My question is, is there any image processing tools that could run on the netbook (Samsung NC10) obviously, the likes of photoshop won't work, but is there an alternative

    3. What's the best image processing software available that is free to use?

    Any other hints or tips would be great.

    IMO:

    1. Picassa and Gimp (with ufRAW plugin)

    2. I think most should work, including Photoshop.

    You could try Gimp :)

    Super quick responses!!!

    I've just got myself a copy of CS4 off one of the guys in work, he had it for college projects and I've tried installing it on the netbook, it seems to work pretty well actually, I'm pretty amazed to be honest.

    I thought it would be dog slow, but it's not, I could live with this.

    I've used GIMP in the past but think it's quite difficult to use, it could just be that I'm not used to it.

    Here is a quick before and after of a shot that I took that I put through CS4, now, I used the JPEG because I didn't shoot it in RAW, but I would like your comments as to the before and after.. Obviously it's not a big change, but I think it's made the original a bit better looking..

    Since you are using a Canon 500D, you should have Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software which comes with the camera on CD. It's actually pretty good at processing raw files, and will do a batch processing if you have a lot of images requiring the same type of PP.

    Once you have installed the version that came with the camera, download and install the most recent version direct from Canon. Will run fine on a netbook under WinXP.
