Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mountain bike stem size

    Hi Guys, Getting a handlebar from Mayan with 25.4mm clamp for the stem. I thought this would be standard mountain bike size.

    But as I go looking at websites, i am finding 25.8, 26mm and 31.8 ..... but very very few 25.4mm

    Will the 25.4bars just fit in a 25.8 or a 26 .... Does the 0.6mm really make a difference ...

    I am looking for a high rise stem ... 100 or 110mm length ... 35 degree or even more raise. Suggestions welcome.

    The bars I am getting are Midge bars and it is recommended to get it a couple of cms higher than the drop bars and closer as well.

    Thanks, SC

    By the way, if it doesn't say clamp size under the mountain bike stem category, does it mean 25.4mm by default

    There are pages of MTB stems on chain reactions! A few of them are 25.4mm.

    Thank you sir .. CRC, Wiggle already checked out ... nothing for the the length and rise I want ... but it seems a lot of MTB bars are also moving to 31.8 clamp size ... the oversized just seems to be more common now.

    Does any stem which does not specify a size in the MTB section default to 25.4?

    More importantly, finally found loads in SJS in teh right size ... anyone putting in an order there and want to share shipping costs .. :)

    25.4mm = standard mtb
    26.0 = standard road
    31.8 = oversized mtb and road

    You shouldn't really have a problem finding a standard sized mtb stem. What size are you looking for?

    http://www.bunneysbikes.com/products/BBB-Highrise-Ahead-Stem-Alloy,-25.4mm-Diameter-x-35-Degree-Rise.html

    Since its BBB there's a good chance a LBS could have it or get it in.

    I change between a 40mm and a 100mm depending on what I'm at, don't know much about the science involved but shorter stem generally works for a more comfortable casual ride yet very very sensitive steering, longer stem is nicer when theres a lot climbing involved and control needed but hurts my neck on the flats/downhills, but thats what works for me, everyone different etc! Pretty huge difference between the two.

    Thanks for that ... been there .. done that .. when I said 100-110mm length and 35-40degree rise, it has all been calculated in excel ... of course I didn't get a nice looking graph like below, but the size I asked for is not pulled out of thin air.:). Its based on what I am riding now and where I want to position my new bars.

    A 35°+ stem will look a bit goofy and not at all rad.

    Would you consider a riser bar?

    As filthy minded as I am, I never noticed the phallic undertones.

    Sorry for posting this filth.
