Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Cabinet has accepted the resignation of Chief of Staff Lt Gen Dermot Earley who is stepping down for health reasons.

He is being succeeded by one of his current deputies, Major General Sean McCann.

General Earley, 62, was not due to retire until next February. However, he has been suffering from a debilitating illness since last autumn.

He had signalled his intention to stand down seven weeks ago after he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the Taoiseach.

Dermot Earley played Gaelic football with his native Roscommon for 20 years from 1965 to 1985 and won two All-Star awards.

He later went to manage Roscommon as well as Kildare, where he now lives.

In a distinguished military career, he was also one of the first members of the army ranger wing. He served for four years as a senior military adviser at UN Headquarters in New York, and twice in Lebanon.

The new Chief of Staff, General McCann, is a native of Co Cork but was raised in Co Tipperary.

A cavalry officer, he joined the army in 1970 and studied at University College Galway and Fort Leavenworth in the US.

General McCann has served overseas on six occasions, including Lebanon, Israel, Iraq/Kuwait border and the former Yugoslavia.

He played rugby for UCG and Connacht and captained the Defence Forces and the Curragh (now Newbridge Rugby Club).

Both General Earley and General McCann live in Newbridge, Co Kildare.

Defence Minister Tony Killeen said he looks forward to working closely with General McCann and he thanked Dermot Earley for, what he said was, his truly remarkable contribution to public life.

It could hardly have been refused! How many other countries would tolerate having its senior military commander out of the loop for so long?

He's a true gentleman, met him a few years back on an RDF camp, you cant be anymore Irish than Dermot Earley. He got leave from his training in the ARW to play in an All Ireland final. My prayers are with him and his family as he battles his illness.

I think he won an All Ireland U21 medal in 1966. Has he any sons in the Army BTW ?

His son is a Captain in the MP's, also pays Inter County football with Kildare. Like his father, he's a gent.

Having met the man, Lt. General Earley is an absolute gentleman and a perfect role model for any young soldier currently serving. He was a man who would speak to you as if you were his equal, rather than simply a Private etc. yet still recieved complete respect and admiration from anyone around him. His achievements throughout his career speak for themselves and anyone who has met him, will tell you he was a soldier's CoS.

He's a major loss to the DF, I wish him well in retirement.
