Sorry I have only played the front 9.

    1. Uphill drive, right half of fairway is slightly better. Take an extra club for the 2nd shot as it is uphill.

    2. Stay right with your drive as left will be blocked by trees. The 2nd shot is tight so unless you have a clear shot at the green it is better to lay up short on the flat ground.

    3. Tight drive.......don't miss right.

    4. Par 3 with 40m drop to green. If it's 150m then pick your 150 yard club.

    5. Tight drive......use the slope on the right.

    6. Be careful of the burn at the bottom of the hill so stay well back from it.

    7. Par 3 - slightly uphill so take enough club.

    8. Long par 5. Stay left with drive and with 2nd shot (don't fire towards the green with your 2nd).

    9. Tight fairway. Stay right as the slope on the left can gather your ball.

    1. Drive needs to be on the right hand side of the fairway. Aim over the right hand edge of the bunker (on the left) as the fairway bends left. Alternatively a high draw aimed at the right rough is a good tee-shot.

    2. Par 3 - avoid the trees on the right.

    3. You want to avoid the rough with your drive. Make sure you have enough club to avoid the ditch shot of the green.

    4. Stay left if you can but anywhere in the fairway is fine. It's an easy par 5 if you hit a good drive.

    5. A difficult driving hole. Stay as far right as you can with your drive as you can be blocked by trees if you go left. Aim short left of the green with your second as the ball will kick in and down the slope.....maybe take one less club for your 2nd because the slope can help especially in the summer.

    6. The sharp dogleg means that you've got to make a decision with your teeshot. Either aim where you can see or cut the corner. It can be a card wrecker so maybe just hit where you can see and dunt a rescue wood up for your 2nd. It's a par 5 so you'll still get there in 3.

    7. Par 3 - just hit the green.

    8. Par 5 - stay down the right with your drive but don't stray into the trees. Left is fine if you are confident of hitting over the high trees. Avoid the trees close to the green on the left with your 2nd.

    9. Smash your best drive down the left, flick a wedge on and hole the putt.

    10. It's important to hit the fairway as you don't want to be blocked by the small trees in the rough.

    11. Hmm.......smash a drive or play safe. Be careful as the OOB right is a magnet. You may as well hit a rescue wood and a wedge here rather than try for the big drive. Aim at the left hand fairway bunker and let the ball slide back into the fairway.

    12. Par 3. Even though it is uphill it plays a bit shorter than it looks. Missing short is better than long.

    13. I tend to hug the left hand rough here as I find it an easier line even though there's lots of fairway on the right. Make sure you take enough club for your 2nd as the bunker is well short of the green and therefore makes the shot seem shorter than it is, so relay on your yardages.

    14. A difficult driving hole as the temptation is to try to cut the dogleg. It's a par 5 and it's better to aim way left. If you are short left then you'll have a shot. Short right means your 2nd shot is blind and over the OOBs.

    15. Par 3.......some day I'll dig this hole up as it's by far my worst hole. Anything right is OOBs. Pull it left and you still have a hard shot onto the green and the chance of thinning it into the OOBs. Just hit it onto the green. Short isn't the end of the world here.

    16. Stay left with your drive as you can be blocked by trees if you go right.

    17. Par 5. Stay right with your drive but avoid the trees. The hole doglegs left so you want to be on the right after your drive. For your third shot, aim at the left edge of the green as everything kicks to the right.

    18. A lovely finish. Aim left and let the ball slide round the corner. If you get the drive right then you can get well down the hill. Aim left for your 2nd shot and let the slope take the ball down to the hole for a tap in birdie (I wish.....ok so I have had a couple here.).

There are two 18s at Clandeboye. The "big course" is the Dufferin but there's a shorter and quite tricky course also - The Ava. Ok I'll do them both.

It's been a while since I've played it so hopefully they haven't changed the layout.

    1. Relax and take in the view over Belfast Lough. The OOBs right is a magnet so stay well left and let your teeshot run off the hill and back onto the flat of the fairway. You don't need a long drive so a fairway wood or even an iron is fine here as a well struck shot will only leave a mid to short iron. Aim at the left edge of the green for your 2nd and let the ball come in off the slope. Right is bad at this hole.

    2. A long uphill par 3. Hit one more club than you think. Don't drag it left as it's a hard chip from down there. A very tricky green that can be lightning fast in summer. Allow for more break and roll when above the hole.

    3. There's quite a bit of room on the left so use it if you can.....anything right is lost. Pitch short left for your 2nd and let the slope do the work.

    4. If you are 3 over then you haven't done too badly but it gets worse. This is an evil hole. You must hit the fairway. There's more room than you think down the left and the ideal shot is to hug the left rough. If you miss the fairway then it's a chip-out.......don't try to hit the million to one shot at this hole. The further you can go with your tee-shot the better. Being overly safe just leaves a long 2nd shot. The 2nd shot is not much easier as there's trouble all around the green. Being short with your 2nd is not too bad. If you walk off with a par here then you've probably gained a shot or two.

    5. That's the hardest stretch of holes behind you. The next is a par 3. It's maybe 3 clubs from front to back so make sure you take the right club. The tendency is to be short.

    6. This used to be a great par 5 hole but they ruined it with new bunkers. There's a ditch to avoid with your tee shot but it's only in play in the summer. It's a long shot to get over it but don't run into it. You used to be able to have a crack at the green in two but the fairway bunkers short of the green mean it's now a long carry. So the best strategy is to hit a short drive on the fairway and then a rescue wood short of the bunkers leaving a wedge onto the green. Darren Clarke hit a drive and 9 iron here!

    7. Stay right with your drive or the trees on the left can block you out. Don't let your 2nd leak to the right as the slope makes the chip difficult. Long is ok here (well not that long).

    8. One of the tough holes. You've got to hit a long straight drive here otherwise just play it as a par 5.

    9. Aim down the right and draw the ball back. You can get all the way down to the bottom of the hill if you hit a good drive here.

    10. Another hard hole. You really need to aim right and draw the bal round the corner as it's a long hole. Avoid the trees to the right of the green. A par here is excellent.

    11. Par 3. Tricky if you miss the green.

    12. If you can carry the bunkers down the right then this is the shot. Otherwise stay to the left. Keep your 2nd down the right as the left can be soggy. Aim to the right of the flag as everything rolls left.

    13. Stay left with the drive as you have an easier shot in. Avoid the bunker in front right so stay left and cut the ball into the heart of the green.

    14. Use your yardages at this hole as you don't want to be short (splash) or long. It's a two tiered green so make sure you hit the right level.

    15. Hit a high draw at the gorse on the right and use the slope to gain yardage. Short right is better than left if you miss the green.

    16. Give me oxygen - it's a steep hill. Smash a drive over the thicket to the left......there's plenty of room on the left. It's a hard green to hit as the green runs at 45 degrees left to right so you really need to cut the ball into the flag (but avoid the bunker on the right). Short left of the green gives you the easiest chip so aim left and cut the ball in.

    17. Stay left with your drive to avoid the bunker short of the green (you can get close to this green with a god drive.....maybe even reach it). Left is by far the easier shot in.........don't go over the back of the green though.

    18. Another long hole. Stay right with your drive as the hill will make your 2nd shorter. You'll have to take one or two clubs more if you are down to the left. Best to miss this green short right so aim at the bunker on the right and draw it is.

    http://www.cgc-ni.com/12/Dufferin-Course/

Most of my comments above are reflected in the course guide so I guess my advice is fairly good.

This is the smaller of the two courses. It's only just over 5500 metres. Whereas the Dufferin is about long drives and maybe long 2nd shots, the Ava is about hitting the fairway and then most 2nd shots are wedges. It's a good test of accurate driving so don't be deceived by its short length.

    1. The first hole is fairly straight forward but don't let your teeshot leak to the right as there's a bank and some bushes out there. Hit a fairway wood with a bit of draw. Keep your 2nd shot to the right of the pin and let the slope take the ball towards the hole.

    2. Ok so here's where it gets hard. This is a very tricky par 5 especially from the back sticks. If you miss the fairway then it's 3 off the tee. Hit your fairway wood or anything that keeps the ball straight. Job done? Well not quite unless you hit a big drive or the tees were well forward. If you are lucky then you can hit a wood over the OOB on the left. If you are too far back then you have a very tricky shot as the landing is only about 30 yards wide. Laying up short of the OOB leaves a long blind 3rd shot.

    3. A "simple par 3" but make sure you hit the green. Left is in big trouble. Right still leaves a difficult shot. Take enough club as there's a bank at the back of the green which will push your ball back again.

    4. A short par 4 which really needs to be played from the tiger tees right up in the trees (beyond the 8th tee). You can drive the green from the members tee but there's a narrow entrance to the green and OOB left and right. Best to just hit the fairway but be careful as everything runs to the right here so you can easily bounce OOBs. The 2nd shot is best hit short and let the slope run the ball onto the green. Don't go long.

    5. Another short 4 par. Use a fairway wood and stay slightly right.......don't go long right as you'll have no shot.

    6. A very tricky par 3. Everything kicks left so you need to aim at the right hand edge of the green. Too far right though is lost.

    7. A very tempting hole. Short and on the fairways is the safe shot. However you can hit a fairway wood over the gorse on the right towards the 5th green. You'll then be able to see the green (the short option leaves a tricky blind shot). OOBs left makes this a difficult hole and its easy to run out of fairway left.

    8. A nice par 5. Avoid the gorse on the right. Use the slope on the left if you want. Stay right with your 2nd shot unless you are going for the green.

    9. A great driving hole. Keep your drive well left as right makes it a tricky 2nd over the bunker. You can get very close to this green with a good drive but the safe sot is an iron or rescue wood down the left (stay left of the small tree in the "middle" of the fairway with your teeshot).

The course gets a bit easier now (that 9 used to be part of the Dufferin Course). Unless they've added some, there are no bunkers on this 9.

    10. Par 3 - Stay left as everything kicks to the right.

    11. Fred Dalys' Drive. This is a long par 4 which needs a long draw for the drive. Or hit over the tall trees on the left......hitting where you can see just pushes you out into trouble. There's a ditch running across the fairway but they've covered part of it over so it is easier than it used to be. Stay left for your 2nd as anything short kicks hard right down the hill.

    12. Allen Burns Pitch (I believe that he was the one-armed Champion of the World). This is a straight forward par 3 but not as easy as it looks.

    13. A great par 5 if you can slide a long drive round the dogleg. Otherwise stay well left and safe. Hug the left rough for your 2nd as the ball can run down into trouble on the right.

    14. Looks an easy drive but if you let it slide right then the tress will block you out. Aim at the right edge of the green for your 2nd.

    15. It's just a flick with a wedge but stay right......left is bad.

    16. A nice driving hole. Aim at the OOB on the right and draw the ball into the fairway and up onto the top level just short of the tree in the middle of the fairway. If you are left then you might get a view if the pin but generally the 2nd is a blind shot. Get your yardages correct as you'll not see the ball land. The OOBs on the right and the gorse on the left makes this a harder hole than it first appears.

    17. This is a short par 4, Aim over the big tree with a draw. Don't let it leak to the right. You need to hit the green with your 2nd as it's a hard chip if you miss right.

    18. Aim at the 13th green with a bit of draw. You only need a fairway wood but it is important to hit the middle of the fairway. Anything tight left will run into the bushes or the lane. If you stay out too far to the right then you have to carry the tall trees beside the green.

    Macreddin GC -Back 9

10- par 4 -Slightly uphill, play one extra club onto the green.

11- par 4- 2 options , take the driver and aim for the mound and leave urself with sw or tee off with a hybrid onto the wider part of the fairway and then pw

12- par 4 - Tricky hole..if u a good 3 wood driver then take it out and place the ball in middle of the fairway, that will leave u with a straight and shorter 2nd shot possibly a 6-7iron. Too much of a driver will leave u a longer second shot possibly on a slope.

13 - par 5, play your second shot first. take a hybird and aim at the bunkers. Then a 3 wood into the green or layup

14 - tricky par 3. if the flag at the back, aim for tree and try get some bounce from the slope behind the tree.

15- par 5 -2 sunday best shot to leave urself with a mid iron into the green. Aim towards the giant tree off the tee box.

16- par 4 long - Aim for the bunker with a nice draw to leave urself with a mid iron/hybrid to the green.

17 - Par 3 - always one club longer to avoid the bunker and stream in front.

18 - par 4 - aim between the tree and bunker to leave urself a mid iron into the green..

Word of caution - The back 9 requires good strategy of placing your ball, no point going john daly here...the course is much tighter than the front 9.

Playing rathsallagh friday morning in the open singles.

    anybody got any info, please?

Definitely take an iron off the tee on the 3rd

Even if you cream your drive on the 6th its a 3 shotter to reach the green so I'd say as well off to lay up with second

If tees are forward the 14th is drivable if you catch a good one. If you push it right past the trees it opens up well so even in the rough you should be ok

Try best as i can to help you:

Hole 1: Par five, try favour left hand of fairway wit drive, if u catch a big drive its reachable in 2.
Hole 2: Straight away par 4, water to rite off tee if you play a fade, hidden dip before green makes 2nd longer than it looks.
Hole 3: Par 4, 8 iron to corner off tee and same to green, more water to rite of green.
Hole 4: Par 3 slightly up hill, plays bit longer than it looks.
Hole 5: Longish par 4, try favour left side of fairway again, as fairway falls to the rite. 2nd shot is down hill to green if you drive far enough.
Hole 6: Short par 4, leave driver in bag here, cause if your big hitter you'll reach pond in front of green. 3 wood and wedge gets you there.
Hole 7: Shorter par 4 than 6, only 4 iron wedge to green, pond short of green again so easily reachable with more than 4 iron.
Hole 8: Long par 4, best played with fade but dont stray to far rite into out of bounds, second could be as much as a utility depending on how long you hit it.
Hole 9: Par 3, better long than short water all around front of green no more than 8 iron at any time.
Hole 10: Par 5, straight down middle, water to rite of green if going for it in 2. More water to rite of fairway if laying up.
Hole 11: Par 3 downhill, dont go left as its wet.
Hole 12: Long par 4 uphill, fade suits again as fairway slopes to rite again. Hidden ditch to rite off tee if you go to far rite its just over bunker in view on rite.
Hole 13: Par 5 with elevated tee shot, fade suits again off tee, hole goes around corner again from fairway to elevated green, hidden dip in fairway if you lay up in 2.
Hole 14: Short par 4, 3 wood and wedge will get you there, stay away from hill and gorse on rite hand side.
Hole 15: Par 4 around the lake, driver off tee, hard to get flat lie for second shot to an elevated green.
Hole 16: Par 3 all over water and rushes, better long than short, can be anything off tee up to 4 iron depending on tee placement.
Hole 17: Par 4 again, driver and wedge will get there, you could be blind with hill for second depending how far you hit it off tee.
Hole 18: Par 5 to finish, depending on your drive its reachable in 2, but theres a pond to clear if you do decide to go for it. Its a 3 shotter if you hit a bad drive.

Course is in good nick and greens were pole forked few weeks back but there improving all the time. Hope this helps you take the money of the in-laws:D.

Roomwrecker, I played it a few weeks back. It was a good challenge and not too penalising for an 18 handicapper. A good few nice holes and good track in general. Lots of water but just try to imagine it's not there (that's what I'm told by my mate anyway and it works)

    Enjoy

Anyone got a course guide for Rathfarnham, Jimmy Bruen there in a couple of weeks and Ive never played it before?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

I normally have a good memory when it comes to courses but don't remember too much about this one(played it last year). I'm sure you know it's only 15 holes so it's not even reviewed in "Hooked". You play 1, 3 and 4(I think) again to make up 18. 1st is a short slightly uphill par 4 that dog legs left. A good long iron(~200yds) down the right side will leave a wedge to the green. It's a nicely framed hole from the tee with trees right and left. No.2 is a straight forward par 3 about 160 yards. Best hole from what I remember is probably 3 - longish downhill par 4. 4th is a nice par 5, kind of dog legs left then a bit right at the end. Nice green, don't go long - flower beds and path close enough to the back edge. There's a nice downhill par 5 dogleg right in the middle of the back nine(14?). Reachable with a good drive and no need to be too greedy down the right.

Sorry not much of a guide :o It's a nice course and not as open as it looks if you've seen it from the M50. It's quiet similar in a lot of ways to its neighbour Edmonstown if you've played there.

Playing Open singles in New Forest this Friday - anyone have a detailed course guide by any chance? Or at least some general pointers!?

any help welcome - looking forward to it, believe it's a nice track

Hole 1: 366 YDS Par 4 index 12, straight away hole between mounds bunker on rite in play with driver.
Hole 2: 160 YDS Par 3 index 18, simple enough par 3, three bunkers to rite of green and ditch to left if you pull it.
Hole 3: 309 YDS Par 4 index 8, bunkers in middle of fairway best avoided, can be driven if wind is in rite direction.
Hole 4: 417 YDS Par 4 index 2 long tough hole big drive needed to get on in two, stream short of green that will catch anythin thats not well struck.
Hole 5: 454 YDS Par 5 index 14, stay rite of big tree in view on left if you have any notions of going for it in two, pond to rite of fairway that catches any weak shots and stream running in front of green also.
Hole 6: 538 YDS Par 5 index 6, stream spilts fairway here only in play from tee if your a big hitter, trees all down left side to.
Hole 7: 407 YDS Par 4 index 10, fade required off tee here, dont stray to far rite as big bunkers will catch your drive, stream running along front of green here to.
Hole 8: 409 YDS Par 4 index 4, tee shot slighty uphill, stay straight if you can, second is bit downhill to elevated green.
Hole 9: 118 YDS Par 3 index 16, lovely short par 3 which is enclosed by walls, green is tricky so be close to flag.
Hole 10: 423 YDS Par 4 index 3, draw required here, hope to catch the downslope of the fairway to make the second shorter to an elevated green.
Hole 11: 207 YDS Par 3 index 17, crazy index for this, its downhill but theres trouble all around the green, bunkers short rite and trees come into play also.
Hole 12: 421 YDS Par 4 index 1, lovely hole fade best off tee, stream runs across fairway but is not in play with a driver. Green is set into a corner with bunkers short front.
Hole 13: 381 YDS Par 4 index 9, hit it straight down middle here, second is downhill to a green set into trees with a pond to the front, be up.
Hole 14: 384 YDS Par 4 index 13, downhill par 4 with everythin on view from the tee, most bland hole on the course.
Hole 15: 535 YDS Par 5 index 7, get the climing boots on here cause its all up hill, no chance of reaching in two, avoid trees on rite handside of fairway.
Hole 16: 206 YDS Par 3 index 5, tough par 3 big bunkers either side of green and if the wind is blowing it can play up to 3 wood as green is very exposed.
Hole 17: 497 YDS Par 5 index 11, ditch/water on rite side of fairway in play off tee. Best played as three shotter as green is slim and narrow and anythin long of green is dead.
Hole 18: 339 YDS Par 4 index 15, tee set into trees with teeshot requiring a fade, if your tee shot is straight its in the bunkers in view from tee, second shot is to a slighty elevated green with bunkers all around it.

Length 6571, White Tees Par 72, hope this helps in some way. Its a lovely course, you should enjoy it.

    Any tips for Howth GC?

    ok basic tips

Hole 1: Drive over white stick on crest of hill. Ball will roll left when it lands.
Hole 2: Aim at the white rock or right of it for a much easier second shot.
Hole 3: beware of the drain in the fairway. Second/Third shot is a little longer than it appears.
Hole 4: Much better short of the green than over it. You get some carry due to the height of the tee but this is easily negated if you are playing into the breeze.
Hole 5: The approach to the green is steep - you will not get up with too low a club. Safe option is to play to the corner and pitch up. If you can drive to the corner than grand and if not consider the safe option.
Hole 6: Ball will move right when it lands so the line is towards the bunker if you are brave enough. Out of Bounds on the left. It is possible to drive this hole or through it if you hit long.
Hole 7: The perfect drive here is a draw that lands on the right side of the fairway. Second shot will move right when it lands so best place to land it is the centre of the fairway.
Hole 8: I reckon it plays about 10m shorter due to the carry of the hill.
Hole 9: Aim for the left corner of the green - ball will move right. It is possible to drive this green. It is impossible to stop a chip on it. Land your approach short. Green is made of glass some days.
Hole 10: Safe tee-shot is short of the gap but it is an uphill tee-shot.
Hole 11: Approach shot is longer than it looks. It is exceptionally rare to be over the green.
Hole 12: Land drive on the right side of fairway. To carry over the gorse is not that far - it looks worse than it actually is. Slippy green so approach shot should be below the pin.
Hole 13: Probably the longest carry required for a tee shot but even short hitters will get it out if they hit it well. Just look at the fairway when on the tee.
Hole 14: There is a marker on the fairway (white stick again I think) drive over it. Ball will move to left when it lands. Green slopes towards you so is quite receptive to high pitches but otherwise land your approach short of the green and let it run on. Much better off short here than long.
Hole 15: If you are going to err then err to the right side - you can get some lovely bounces from here.
Hole 16: With the approach you are better off short and in front of the green than the right distance and right of it.
Hole 17. Aim towards the 11th tee and do not take too much club. Approach can be tricky but if running it in land on the hump in front of the left side of the green and land a little further in front of the green than you think.
Hole 18: Aim at the men's locker room door off the tee. Green is slippy.
Edit: If you are a long hitter aim more towards the other end of the clubhouse on the 18th.
And do let us all know how you and your sherpa get on.

I have to play a match in Killiney shortly. I know the course, played it recently. I was wondering if anyone knows where they tend to put their pins for inter-club matches? There can be quite a difference between front/middle/back there, and the type of approach shot required, so it might be good to know if I get up for a practise round. Thanks.
