Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

One of these five will win it.
    Brazil
    Spain
    Italy
    Germany
    Argentina
If i was a betting man i'd back Italy at that price.
USA are an excellent long shot to make the final.

I think you can add the Dutch to that list, their qualifying and friendly form has been outstanding, far better than the Argentines for example. I they can keep their glass players fit of course but it's only for a month so it's a decent possibility

    Argentina
    Holland
    Spain

in that order of preference simply for the entertainment factor in the World Cup if those teams where to go all the way.

I'll be rooting for Germany anyway. 3rd in the last world cup and 2nd the world cup before. Not to mention 2nd at the Euros last time out. Hard to argue with that record tbh. Not a bad record for a team that were never in the top level of favourites pre-tournament

Plus I was at the last world cup in germany and it was the coolest country with the coolest people so I'd like them to win!

I'll be rooting for England, or at least I will attempt to, that would be the grown up thing to do.

However, I will find myself dancing with joy when they get knocked out for some bizarre reason.

I'll be supporting Italy but I'm not very optimistic, their squad just isn't very good.

I have Spain, Germany and Brazil backed, so any of those 3 will do nicely with Milito or Villa as Top Scorer and Xavi Player of the Tournament.:P

Hoping the Dutch do well. Think it might be their time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

The Netherlands, they always play great football and promise a good bit of entertainment. Their chances to go all the way depend on De Jong and van Bommel playing out of their skins to protect their back four and nip counters in the bud.

My next preference would be to see Mexico do well. They a technically gifted side. Weak in defence (particularly set pieces) but if they keep their heads together and control possession I think they can surprise a few people.

It'd be nice for an African side to go far, but I can't see it happening. I think Cameroon will do the best of them (Song and Makoun will make life very difficult for opponents), but the draws are all very difficult. If Africa can get two teams to the second round I think they will be doing well.

I always root for the Dutch in major tournaments. I have done since France 98. I think it all started with dennis bergkamp, and being an Arsenal fan we always have someone in the Dutch squad I can root for

Spain and Brazil - for financial purposes.

Holland - the team I've always had a soft spot for.

And Slovenia - for sticking it to FIFA, and knocking out one of the four seeded teams in those playoffs.

I'm having a hard time making up my mind. I'd like an unfancied side playing decent football to do it, but instead I'm going to plump for Germany. Or France, **** it, any excuse for a party.

As it happens Germany ARE going to play decent football this time I believe. Although you can hardly call them an unfancied side.

I usually find Germany decent to watch actually. I'm a fan of the old shoot-on-sight policy they had going for a while when they had about 8 players who could score from 40 metres.

From the looks of it, most people are supporting the USA.

Can we make them the official boards.ie World Cup team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

The USA, not from there or anything, not even the fact there in Englands group, just like some of the players on that team! :)

I think the 'Good of the Game' argument goes well with the USA as well. If they have a great World Cup then soccer, already rapidly rising in popularity, could really take off.

Spain or Holland for me, i have them down to meet in the final too. Mexico and Serbia might be worth a watch too.

FIFA decided to seed the playoffs when it became clear that big nations like France, Russia & Portugal could end up playing each other in the playoffs and screwing smaller countries like Ireland, Bosnia & Slovenia for commercial gain.

Slovenia (pop. ~2M) put out Russia (pop. ~141M) in the playoffs

Sepp is probably still crying at the 'money lost' by Slovenia being little upstarts! :)
