My son aged 7 was diagnosed with Dyspraxia a year ago.
However I'm wondering cn this be mixed up with ADHD or are the symptoms of both similiar?
Lately i have been reading up on ADHD , (a magazine article caught my attention and I read up further).
He seems to fall in the ADHD category more so than dyspraxia,.
He takes forever to get dressed, needs his clothes in order.
Can't remember instrucitions if more than one is given at a time, ie, if I sent him upstairs to wash his hands, fine, but if I also said wash your hands and go into your room and get your shoes, he'd forget.
Sports are a disaster, he would rather talk to adults that are helping out than mix with the kids.
Bike riding was never going to happen until recently, he just took off one day on another kids bike with no stabilisers, we were gobsmacked. (See i thought this was a given in dyspraxia that bike riding couldn't be done without stabilisers)

Whats making me wonder about ADHD is
He talks non stop..Seems to blurt out whatever comes into his head, could be answering one question and before you'd finish the answer, along comes another question..
will not sit down, three minutes tops...
school have mentioned this too, now they give him frequent breaks which help..
Fidgets, hands and legs going constantly..
Brakes most of his toys, just has to see how theyre put together..( I know most kids do this, but there's a line)
    Runs at everything, .
Wouldn't see danger until something does happen, climbing, etc, and like in our street would run across the road if your not holding his hand...
In a shop if I let go of his hand for a minute he's off, taking stuff off the shelf.., would I like this?, maybe so and so would like this..
So impulsive, you know like a toddler, with the bottle of shampoo or washing powder, just about to tip it out, he looks and knows its wrong and before you get to take things off him, he goes and does it anyway.
Is so sorry afterwards, didn't mean it, but forgets as soon as he gets his hugs and kisses..

Sorry if this sounds like I'm giving all the negatives here.
As I said my query is, can dyspraxia be present in conjuction with ADHD?
I think I'm right, but having got a diagnosis of Dyspraxia already, will the specialists think I'm looking for more problems as if he hasn't enough already..
Would the school have mentioned it or would they just be dealing with his dyspraxia,iykwim..
Thanks for reading, any advise? x x

Yes, it can but if you are not happy go back to your dr and the consultant child phyc who's handling your child's case, did they rule out ADHD?

I know ADHD was one of the last things ruled out for my son, turns out the behaviours which they thought was ADHD was anxiety and self stimming so that when his coping skills got better he was less agitated in the class over all.

I know a boy with dyspraxia and aspergers. I've put in bold the similarities between him and your son according to your post.

I'm not saying for a second that your son has aspergers but it does seem possible to have dyspraxia and something else.

I'd say you should go back to whoever made the diagnosis of dyspraxia and get them to assess him again.

    Hi Ell,

My daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD & what you describe sounds typical of ADHD,the impulsiveness, short attention span & so on. ADHD & dyspraxia are commonly found together & most kids that have 1 disorder usually have another to a lessening degree. There's no difinitive test for ADHD, its based on a clinical diagnosis from lengthy questionairres from parents & teachers. Also ADHD symptoms must have been present before the age of 3 for a diagnosis to be made. The school sounds great though, allowing your son to have breaks when he needs them, unfortunetly, this year has been a disaster for my little one in school, i think an understanding teacher makes so much difference. Well best of luck & hopefully you'l get somewhere with the doctors.

My son who is 8 was diagnosed with dyspraxia a year ago also. He displays all the usual problems, i.e, handwriting difficulties/slowness organising himself properly when dressing/awkward gait/weak muscles etc

He also struggles on sports day and cannot attempt to ride a bike without stabilisers...couldn't catch a ball to save his life!!

From what I've read there is a number of children who also present with behavioural problems when dyspraxic. My son doesn't fall into this category, indeed he is overly cautious instead. He isn't impulsive at all but he can become incredibly moody when he fails at a physical task and requires a lot of encouragement to take him out of his mood..........

When he watches an action movie or video games he becomes overly active, hopping up and down like a lunatic. We've been told that this is part of the dyspraxia.......We've been told by his resource teacher who studied Dyspraxia extensively that he needs to do this activity in order to concentrate intently. He is the same with homework as he is constantly humming to himself and yapping to himself when doing maths etc. It has taken me a while to get used to not telling him to hush or to concentrate and stop fidgeting......................as it is how he actually concentrates!!!
