P2P faster than rapidshare? Even on private sites I would find rapidshare can keep a stable speed better, you know you can use a download manager with rapidshare to make it automatic?

    Nick

Depends on what sites you have access to. Faster for me and easier.
I use JDownloader already, good program. By automatic I meant you can have an RSS feed so that when a new episode of a shopw you want comes out in america or something when you are asleep it is automatically downloaded for you and sitting there when you wake up. Once you set that up for loads of things you barely have to click anymore, you can even specify certain quality of downloads you are willing to accept and others won't be downloaded.

I thought for a moment you were downloading each file individually hence the reply! Weird while I find private torrent sites are fast with loads of seeds the speed does fluctuate I've found, rapidshares pritty much dead on all the time

I don't understand why ISPs are bending down backwards to the Record Companies. They are in no way obligated to work with them and implement the 3 Strike Rule.

I suppose by the nature of torrents they are slower at the start and end anyway, just some sites are ridiculously fast and stable, few and far between though. Not saying rapidshare is bad or anything, get a few meg a sec, not so bad eh!

Ehhhh, rapidshare have gotten sued loads of times.

The issue is whether you'd like to hand control of the internet over to a couple of media companies. In ten years (or less) we'll be buying our internet back off them. Teh cnuts.

Maybe, but they will loose customers with this 3 Strike Rule. Maybe not in the Short Term but once people start getting letters from Vodafone about their illegal downloading they'll switch providers.

if any industry should be complaining about piracy its the porn industry.

How the hell do they sell DVDs when ever pirate form of communication (p2p/rapidshare/usenet) is swamped with their videos?

I've wondered this myself a few times.

Profit margins on porn have to have decreased by so so much in recent years. As great as porn is, it just doesn't seem like a profitable industry at all. Obviously it is, or it'd be dead and only amateur would still be getting made, but I'd say it's on it's knees (unless they were making so much profit that the internet has only brought them down to "normal" levels?).

One of the earlier posts in the thread said something about UPC at court today (with IRMA i assume). Anyone got any idea what happened?

well porn movies aren't too expensive to make so i'd imagine its the distributers who are feeling it more

Did any of you P2P/rapidshare users read this?

I think it's an amazing idea and very viable if a lot of people got behind it.

It works out for nearly everyone, artists get paid, record companies get paid, etc... but the change is that companies do not have a monopoly over music & downloaders aren't criminals....

If you're downloading I think it's really important that you look into plans like these because this type of scheme could end this 10+ year battle with downloading in a positive way, if we do nothing & the few people doing something at the moment fail when what they needed was support/idea's - the high probability is that everyone will end up screwed...

This is ****ing ridiculous. If the music industry wants to sell me an album for €25 that would be €7 if I was up north than I am damn well entitled to download it. Thats robbery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,407 ✭✭✭Dartz

Only noobs use p2p.. Just download like a real man and you won't get cut off.

Edit: I cant wait for the stories about eircom customers being cut off because people are cracking the wep codes and using their network.

Friend of mine who'd been having network problems asked me to fix it... turned out this had been the exact problem. Having the access keys being easily reproduceable functions of the SSID is more than a bit dumb.

    Ryan! wrote: »
Yes exactly, how are they supposed to know exactly what the people are downloading?

Probably coz they were the only one to keep the files, and as a result, the only seed :pac:

On a serious note, while I don't condone straight out piracy, it's a great way to listen to music before deciding on buying it. If there's an artist I really like, I'll buy their music, go to their gigs, buy merchandise.

An example of how piracy helps: I pirate CSS's first album to see what they're like. I like it, so I buy it. I recommend it to friends, give them a listen, a subset of them buy it. CSS release second album, me and that subset buy that, and then go to their gig when they come to Ireland. Fair enough some of them may have discovered them without me, but they're not the most well known of bands.

I know this isn't always the case, as there'll always be people who will just pirate albums, never buy them, and never go to live performances, but still, they're probably not gonna buy the album at all anyway.

Just realised that rant was totally off topic (just like half this thread :P).
On topic, I don't think ISPs should have any say in any of my online activity. Say I haven't pirated any music, but get a letter from Eircom saying I have. How do I prove that I haven't? I don't think an IP address handed over to them is enough proof of what I'm doing online

I'm not defending any industry here but just for the sake of argument new albums usually don't go above 20 quid these days. I got Slash's album the other day in the independent record shop Freebird here in Dublin for a princely sum of 15Euro which I thought was worth it.

Aren't seasons of TV shows retailing at about €25 these days?

I'd imagine the effort, time and money going into producing a full season of a TV show far outweighs a music album, and also the significant amount more people that would be working on a TV show, from acting to writing, camera and lighting, that need to be paid.

Even at €15, I still think Music albums are over-priced.

agree with that 100%. i'd pay for my music but not the amount they're selling it for. as long as i can donate what i can, i'd be for that. whether the record companies are willing to do that is another thing. it'd probably mean taking a hit to their profits.

That's why people would have to group together and lobby/fight for it.

You're dealing with money here & these people will fight dirty to make maximal *insert technical business word for profits* despite the fact that it would benefit everyone.

I don't really know what to do though, just keep an eye on how things progress I suppose :(

Hmm p2p is way better than rapidshare etc(and I use rapidshare premium), faster, can make downloads automatic etc.

I've yet to be convinced.. I used to pay for rapidshare but now I'm onto megaupload. Find a movie with a few links and I get 2500kb/s every single time. Torrents have broader selection but can't match that speed.

I get faster than that with RS, I get faster again with torrents. Depends on your net and quality of the torrent, which is probably limiting you.

    What's you internet connection run at? 30mb? 40mb? 50mb?
Mine 30mb UPC line runs at 25mb so 2,500kb/s is pretty much the maximum possible.

I only use torrents when I really want something that isn't on the hosting sites.. These torrents are badly seeded so that's where my opinion of them comes from. I'd say the most I've ever had on a torrent is 700kb/s.. Maybe you use private trackers or something.

Side note: I wish ISPs would start describing their net connections using bytes instead of bits. It's just an inflated description and it leaves some people thinking they're going to get alot faster.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

Dunno what trinity net speed is, fast :pac:
700 really, even on **** public ones I get over a meg a lot(even on home 15 meg), sometimes a lot worse! Yes private ones, only way to go, the rest are a joke in comparison.

Ye don't like the description either

You know, tbh, it probably has to be tackled because it has gotten too damn easy for noobs to download copyrighted material. Until the noobs are scratching their heads again, we can continue setting up our ports, maintaining our ratios, updating our peerblocks, configuring our flashget and downloading our nzbs :D

reading in the paper today, UPC aren't giving into IRMA. saying they're just a "mere conduit". IRMA are also going against O2 and 3 to force them into what eircom's doing.

hope to fcuk they stand up against that shower of cnuts that are IRMA.

Glad they're not caving, unfortunately it's now in the hands of the Irish Judiciary, a fact that makes me very, very afraid.
