    Hi folks,

After talking to a friend of mine who is a mammy and hates her commute to dublin everyday and leaving her baby in a creche, im trying to come up with a business that would help her stop her commute and work in Carlow

I have a premises upstairs in Carlow and have been thinking for a long time what to put in there and with times are they are I would need it to be a recession friendly business.

Has anyone any ideas what I could do to make some money and be able to offer situations to other mammys etc

One of my ideas would be receptionist/ admin services either on site or in our own office for companies that cannot afford a full time worker now.

    Any suggestions?

Set for a low budget porn movie or Fair City. "Casino". Squat for the gum chewers from the Temple. A place for the young people to hang out, because apparently they have no where to go or nothing to do and that's why they try burn down OAP's houses.

Do you own the premises? Sounds like ideal space for a start up to rent. Maybe renting is a better option than trying to come up with a business based on your assets as opposed to an actual need for the business.

The first optuion may be a good idea with all the extras available too.

The market has a lot of students - so maybe a CV service, thesis printing & binding service, corporate presentation services etc etc.

There are loads of small things companies / students / general public need doing that is too much hassle for themselves.

Your friend's mother would probably need to be prepared for small earnings initially, but there are possibly grants / tax refunds available for setting up, also if she / her partner invest up to about €7k each, this is tax deductable at higher rate under seed capital programme.

Apparently there are 4000 students at Carlow I.T. , I think this may include Wexford campus, evening classes and a bit of rounding up. The majority of them will only require printing services in their final year / end of year projects. Jones Business Systems. Great location for students. Also it is just a small part of their overall business. Very hard to compete with them. At the very least they will divide the potential customers.

wow - 4000 - no wonder there are so many pubs around!

Jones are out in one of the business paks now, so something a bit closer may suit many students, but it is just one of many services that could be offered.

    Proof reading is another service.

Presentation creation - if the person running the bureau has good presentation skills.

    Credit control for small business.

There are a load of items that can be operated from a town centre office by someone able to multi task.

Thanks for your suggestions some bit strange ie fair city porno, but whatever floats your boat :p

I think the admin part is a good idea its actually a great location and modern office setting.

I was wondering what you guys would think of a temping agency covering everything from retail to admin?

Honestly OP? I think it's great you want to help your friend and all but be aware how hard it is to run a business too. If your serious about it, I'd suggest going to look in the Entrepreneurial & Business Management forum.

Also, As a former student there, I can tell you the student culture is still based on "spend as little as possible". You would want to be charging extremely little to be getting students to come to you over the student union services.

I know I sound negative but I'd hate your friend to leave a job to join one that doesn't last

I think the admin side is something ill look into. I have a degree in management accountants etc

But I also think a temp agency in these days in a good idea as places cant afford full time staff what you think?

Gaming centre, i.e. Lan parties, setup 10 PC's in one room and 10 Playstation 3's in another room. You could staart with 5 of each and see how it goes.

Charge per hour and run competitions for different games and also look at charging users to be able connect in remotely and play for a reduced fee.
