    Hello,

I am looking for suggestions and recommendations for accommodation along the Algarve in Portugal. Planning to go late August/early September 2010. There's just two of us, we'd like somewhere reasonably quiet but close enough to evening entertainment for an occasional night out, preferably within walking distance of a nice beach. Away from the lagerlauts and midnight drunken sing-song. Not too pricey :-(

Self-catering/hotel/cottage/ - don't mind. Would anyone have suggestions or contacts?

Any information welcome. Many thanks in advance!

Forte do Vale apartments are VERY nice. About 10 mins stroll from the main 'strip' and 5 min taxi from the (nicer Old Town). 10 mins walk to small beach and same to a big supermarket. Got a great price last year with alpharooms.com.

Excellent, Alpharooms is a great place to start. Thanks for the tip!

Albufera itself seems rather busy - heard that Lagos and Alvor are a bit quieter?

Anyone have any contacts for the region to book direct with individuals renting out houses/apartments?

I would recommend Lagos. It's full of nice restaurants, no crazy night clubs and right beside the beach. We went to the Marina Club apartments with Sunworld. The room we had was self catering and large. Right on the marina and very modern.

I'd agree with Lagos - was there last year with herself and is a lovely place.
If you do fancy going a bit crazy some nights, the bars up beside the hosels are great and very cheap.
    Actual Conversation
    Me: One cocktail please
Bar girl: Would you like a jug of cocktail
Me: Whats the difference in price
Bar girl: Its the same for a jug as a single cocktail
Me: Get cracking on that jug my girl....

Vilamoura is a nice resort that doesnt attract the 18-30s groups. From fine dining to fast food the restaurant choice is plenty. Hotel accomodation is of better quality and the beach is fab. There is also a Marina and a long sandy beach. Perfect for a romantic break!

VIlamoura might suit the OP but as areas in the Algarve go its one i'd avoid, its just a series of recently built hotels, some golf courses and a marina, it has none of the portugese charms that most of the other Algarve villages and towns have.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want some of the luxuries in life then Vilamoura has an array of fabulous hotels and great restaurants. However if its rustic Portugese charm then as bamboozle suggested some of the other towns may suit. Here is a guide I dug up on the Algarve. It may be of assistance: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/portugal/algarve/735101/Resort-report-The-Algarve.html

What about Cabanas, in the eastern Algarve?

Fabulous beach (that you access via a punt boat!), lovely traditional restaurants and a few bars. No lager louts. 4 miles from Tavira town. Easily accessible to visiting the other resorts in the East. You could even do a day trip to Seville (about 2 hrs away, on motorway).

The Cabanas Park Hotel is nice. Pedras del Rei would be a bit cheaper, a little more basic, but fine.

I stayed in the Casino hotel in Praia da Rocha a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Praia da Rocha is nice and has the best beach I have been to in the Algarve. The hotel is of very good quality and was pretty OK price wise too.
