Telstra in Australia have agreed to transfer their network into the Governments Fibre optic network and will be decommissioning their copper network and transferring their copper customers to Fibre in return for AU$11bn which will see their ducts being plied with fibre.

The Aussies may have destroyed Eircom (B&B) but they appear to be doing things right down under unlike the idiots in this country who consider Three to be a good enough service nationally.

Telstra were at least as greedy , short sighted and obstructive as eircom are. Once they realised the government was serious about the National Broadband plan in Australia they folded completely.

However there is no way that eircoms ducts are worth anywhere near their debts and a similar plan in Ireland would meant that eircom collect at most €1bn. It is imperative that we let them go into their prepack bond debt writeoff before we propose any such move here. You could see an eircom with 'only' €2bn of debt accepting a c.€1bn transfer offer for their ducting on the STRICT condition that they use all of it solely to reduce debt and that they continue to reduce their debt thereafter...year by year.

Hope they get it nailed down before the election. They're not popular and the Murdoch media are gunning for them.
