Hi, I've just moved to Cavan, and am looking for things to do in the evenings after work.

Does anyone know if there is any sub-aqua club nearby?

I'm young and fairly fit, and like most sports like hillwalking, running, kayaking etc. Can't kick a football out of my way though!

I'd be up for doing most things, even if it was learning a new language or skill, basically just a way to meet new people outside the pub as I basically know no one, anyone have any ideas?

Why not join one of the smaller Gym's near you. Most organise walks and training for events etc.

FitForce in BJD is a great spot for meeting people. There are plenty of them around. Search the Cavan Forum for a recent discussion on them.

Thanks very much for the advice lads. I'd definitely be interested in the hiking club, if you got that phone number?

I also found out there's a rugby club, so I might take up playing that again. Cheers.

Join the rugby club, i played there for years. And if your not natural skillful - like me, you can mask it by hiding in the 2nd row like i did for years!

Haha, hence the username I suppose! Yeah, I'm no Brian O Driscoll, so I usually play hooker!

Does anyone know if there's a kayak/canoe club up Virginia way..even over in Monaghan (Carrick area)? Somewhere that'd cater for novices? Would love to have a lash at it now I'm done with college and have a bit more time on my hands. Thanks in advance.

There used to be a sub aqua club based in Enniskillen, about 40 minutes away - not sure if its still active though.

I presume the link posted above is for the cannoe club based in Butlersbridge.

There is also a recently formed Triathlon club - not exactly sure who the contact point is but I'd say the Sports Complex can direct you their way.

Finally, on the Sports Complex, they run loads of classes for different things but the majority of them don't start until September/October

Barring that there is the Rugby Club, Tennis Club, the soccer clubs and a multitude of GAA teams located in or around the town.

Anybody know what the plan for Killykeen park is... I was there recently and was disapointed at the poor condition of the paths and signage..
This could be a great ameanity... I remember being there when the coffee shop was open and there was a nice atmosphere... Now it's like the Forrest Park that time forgot

unfortunately, coillte is a forestry company and the leisure side of things is simply a side issue, a distraction and a cost burdon.

If I understand correctly, people in Kingscourt voluntarily look after the dun a ri park which is why its in such good nick.

Killykeen doesnt have anyone to look after it except one forestry worker who doesnt even work there full time.

If your into walking/hill walking the cuilcagh mountains isnt too far (head for swannlinbar and Florencecourt. Good guides available in the Marble arch caves visitirs centre.

Couple of good pitches in the old quarries there

The shannon erne is a good walk along the tow path to carrick (if your keen)

Your not to far drive wise to the Cooleys

The arigna mountains have a "Miners way" albeit a lot of road walking

Hi, Ive just moved to Cross about a week ago. Is there anything to do if your not into sports and you don't want to go for walks in the dark?

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭NeuroticMonkey

Hi depends on age category really...

I know there's a foróige club in Bailieboro, the gym/pool in Bailieboro is a great facility and friendly enough place to meet people as you tend to see the same faces there around the same time every day. There's a pretty successful Macra group in Virginia:

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ramor-MACRA/131748974155

There's a gospel choir in Killinkere. There are quite a few community groups in Virginia and you can find more info/contact details etc here:

    http://virginia.ie/index.php?page=community-associations

There are plenty of other things going on in Bailieboro (drama, women's group, Red Cross etc). Keep an eye on the local news section of The Celt every week to see what's going on.

    Have fun!
    :D

There's the Manor out on the Dublin road but last time I was there it had basically turned into a créche! There's the Bailie Hotel in Bailieboro but I wouldn't bother if I were you. I think Kells has a few places e.g Vibe in the Headfort Arms (I think that's what it's called!) but I'm not too familiar with the night life in Kells.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭Leelaa22

your lucky Kells is rough, last time I went to the Headford Arms the bouncers wouldnt let me wait outside for my taxi, they said it was too dangerous and made me wait inside. Sure enough when my taxi came I saw two women in pj's running down the street screaming about warning someone and a garda car came too not long after them.

Not many options... have you been to V, is it good? I just dont want to go cause it reminds me for the Vortex in Dunshaughlin. Are there any pubs that would be the Eamon Dorans of Cavan??:D

Ah I like V. :) It's definitely one of the better offerings around here these days. Especially since it's supposedly over 21s so anytime I went there there was a nicer/older crowd. :D

If it's live music you're looking for (and not of the showband type!) again I'd keep an eye on The Celt. There's a new band from Bailieboro called Shouting at Planes that do play live around about (I saw them in Nixy's in B/boro and in Club V once). If you're into indie or more specialist stuff Dundalk would be the place to go I'd say. I've friends in college over there so we go to The Spirit Store a good bit. I actually went to see a band from Carrickmacross last night called The Flaws over there. :) But it's an awful trek so you'd probably need to be staying over there.

ooo its over 21's I didnt know that, that does make it seems better, I hate going to clubs and being surrounded my minors makes me feel a little sad :(
I think I might head in there some weekend soon.
Dundalk sounds like the place to be but yeah it is a trek alright, Ive always the option of sleeping in my car lol
Thanks for all the info :D

Hey, well avoid the cinema in cavan, its a storm cinema. the place is a tip, Last night I went to Omniplex cinema in Enniskillen to see true grit. An adult ticket cost 7.40 euro, the same ticket for the same movie in Storm Cavan costs 9.80. popcorn, drinks and snacks are also much cheaper in enniskillen. The cinema in enniskillen is much cleaner, staff are more friendly and helpful and the toilets are much cleaner in enniskillen with taps that work! So they cant say in cavan that the have higher wage costs etc etc!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭Gophur

And it's 100km, round trip, from Cavan to Enniskillen which will cost well more, in fuel, than the difference in cinema tickets.

That coupled with the VAT going to a different Country, makes such a trip hardly worth it, eh?

If you live in ballyconnell its only 4 miles more to enniskillen than it is to cavan. The cinema in enniskillen is far more comfortable and cleaner and it has better staff. Dedpending on time of day you have to pay to park at the cinema in cavan. Have you seen the way the same staff in cavan handle money and popcorn? That has to be in breach of health and saftey. The cinema in enniskillen has a dedicated snacks counter.
Lets face it the cinema in cavan is way overdue a reduction in prices and an overhaul.
Why should cavan people and anyone whos goes to the cinema in ireland have to pay more for a substandard service.

Storm also own the oddssey cinema chain in the NI, an adult ticket there only costs 6.80 in euro.
Why do the same company charge almost a tenner here?

    Not very good, eh?
