I think legally you are required to have it removed by a specialist firm, and if it is the old fashioned asbestos, rather than the stuff bound in concrete, you really should not be doing anything with it. Either way I think you will have problems disposing of it, you need to get some advice about it.

Been there, did that. It did cost me a fair bit - €6,000 if I remember well. Research a bit and you will find it might be money well spent. Having said that, some types of asbestos seem to be far less dangerous unless they are 'interfered' with, (such as plates used in ceilings when they are cut or broken).

There are special disposal places, and all the asbestos has to be wrapped in a certain way. I don't know where these places are because I used specialists to handle the whole thing.

For peace of mind, call the experts in.

CALL THE EXPERTS IN! Asbestos is linked to cancer! Once you start disturbing it the spores in the dust will get into your lungs&can potentially cause cancer. It all has to be bagged up correctly, u have to wear special masks, clothing, have a special shower to go into everytime u leav the room or house, a container to put the bags in etc.
All in all please dont try do this job yourself!its your life in danger if you do it by yourself&I for one wouldnt pink my life like that. I know it will be expensive but they are the pros&will know how to it correctly&have the correct permits etc!

If you do get some one in make sure you see there disposal certs before you let them near it. I have had three guys out to take some off a shed roof at a cost of about 3000 Euros but none of them could show me there certs. Ran the lot of them. Talk to your local council. Last thing you want is some cowboy dumping it in a field

my uncle died of mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) over 25 years ago he was a builder who like most people didn't know the risks of handling asbestos! the costs of removal may seem high now but what cost do you put on your life and a painful death

I seen a couple off sheets of absetos dumped on the side of a fairly main/busy road, so that got me thinking it must be expensive to get it done properly, the local council took them away today no protective clothing just hopped out of the van and fecked the sheets onto his wagon,

its amazing how some people just dont give a fxck, I bet if i was to dump my stuff on the side of the road id be got and jailed,

Agree 100%. Asbestos removal is not a DIY job.

Got a price a few months back,

€200 collection fee and €400 per tonne

You have to take take it down and they wrap it and give you a cert

Personally I wouldn't touch the more volatile stuff but the roofing sheets are meant to be ok...ish.

This thread has got me thinking...

What are the chances of any asbestos material being used in a '77 build Dublin townhouse?
Was there a cut-off point after which it was prohibited or any such limit on its use?

Site we were on had asbestos roof sheets, our lads exposed the roof before they realised it was asbestos. Site was shut down by H&S and they had to call their wives to bring new cloths as theirs were burned. Property owner got a hefty fine.
