Can anyone recommend somewhere to volunteer?

I'm living in and working in Dublin 6, and have a bit of free time on weekday evening. Hopefully I can find somewhere to volunteer to make a bit of that free time disappear, and give a little back to my community.

The only problem is finding a placement that actually fits into my timetable. I've checked out the Volunteer South Dublin site, but it all seems to be morning and afternoon opportunities.

Can anyone suggest somewhere to volunteer on a weekday evening?

There's plenty of weekend and evening work in St John Ambulance. :)

Hi, the Dublin City South Volunteer Centre might be a good place to start. I think if you live in south end of the city they refer you there.

Yeah, I checked this site, but there are no placements in the evening. Its all morning and afternoon work, unfortuntately. I'm hoping to find something for a few hours after 6pm.

Would adult literacy be of any interest to you ? If so that would be available in the evenings.
Normally the teaching follows the academic year so you would not get anything till Sept., in the meantime checkout NALA and see if it tickles your fancy :-)

I would suggest the Big Brother Big Sister Programme, I volunteer on the programme and find it to be very rewarding. With BBBS, you and your little decide on a time to meet that suits you both, and usually weekday evenings are perfect because of school times etc. You and your little would be matched based on shared interests & hobbies and your personalities. It's an amazing experience.

The Big Brother Big Sister requires a minimum of a years commitment though as ar as I know

That's right it is a one year committment you have to make, but it is definatley worth the time. It is only for an hour a week also so realistically if you want to make a real difference in the young person's life it's going to take a year.
