Thinking of picking up an 04 / 05 RR or an 05 RRS; would appreciate some advice from previous owners on what to look out for when purchasing one.

Won't be buying a petrol variant, fact.

    Thanks

Make sure she hasnt been abused offroad. Look underneath the body of the car check for damage. check for rust! They dont rust alot but some people (myself) do use them for putting a boat in the water and if it's salt water in later years this can cause problems as eventually it will take it's toll.
Make sure air suspension is working properly. I'd rather the proper RR, the sport is really a discovery also isnt as nice on the inside and much smaller. Try and go for a late 05 in order to get the face lift model. Better steoro for example and a nicer grill.
    Make sure it's fully serviced.
Also if you dont plan to use the back seats get a commercial. Cheaper tax/ insurance. But do buy it in the uk and do the least amount of damage when changing it to commercial, you may want to turn it into a passenger in the future. You never know!!

Oh and get the vogue. The hse isnt as nice as front seats for example are not as high of quality compared to the vogue, also the rear seats wont be heated. The hse also dosent have a sunroof.
    Vogue just is better!
    Hope I've been of help.
    PS...
Do take out a warrenty off an specialised company as more than likely it will break. Espically if you do drive it hard/ work it.
    Great car though.

Thanks mate - is Vogue the best of the 05 years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭Theanswers

The Vogue is the best out of any of the years. Unless you go higher "Vogue SE" for example.

However there is good bargins to be had in the uk, the price has gone up for the past year however. Really go for the facelift model. Model Year 2006. Can be got late 2005 though.
An difference between the two would be the screen which is touch screen compared to pre 06 where it was button operated.
There is many other difference which I'm sure i am forgetting.
    Oh.
The Steoro isnt as good in the pre 2006. only 510watt and not like after 2006 which is 710watt dolby digital surround. Great System.
    Any more questions please ask...

I wouldnt touch either, even the diesel models. Motor tax and fuel costs are massive now, imagine what they will be in a year from now. Land Rovers fuel efficiency is one of the worst in the motoring world. Even the 2010 models, not to talk about the 05 models. The EU is even on there back about it!:( I also believe there serving cost are skyhigh here!

But maybe your in the Golden circle??? lol

    Really?
There not as bad as you think. There rather easy to service your self. As I also said you can take out a warrenty if you wish. Also they only cost 288 to tax commercial....

And to be honest there no worse than any other jeep. You can average 25mpg if you want. There is much worse out there.... I think people give a RR a bad deal. The new now to be replaced 3.6 engine was the worlds most efficent diesel engine by the way.

    Ps...
How many 'ordinary cars' will be on the road in 30 years time or still going around fields?
    Very few.

They are more enviromentally freindly than a pirus or whatever that electric car is called. Just look at the facts from the start of the cars life, till when its crushed. RR more freindly FACT...

The time spent on the road is only ONE part of a cars life.

If its going to be a commercial vehicle used for work, ok, but I'd buy something else. But if your just converting it to a commercial vehicle to save on taxes, whats the point. A 4WD Van!

    Check this
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055783631

Also, fuel efficiency is not that bad compared to other makes/models.
tbh, I'd stay away from early RRS. FFRR is a far better and proven option imo.

The op asked for advise on the Range Rover not on buying a van. If he wants to buy a 4WD so what. I like a nice car too like the op i dont spend all my money on booze and fags:).

Hi OP, I'd also recommend the RR over the RRS - to be honest there is a big big difference. Get as new as you can afford - FMDSH is essential and make sure you check ALL electrics - can be expensive if something goes wrong.

Chassis wise keep an ear out for odd noises as suspension components can be prone to wear.

As long as you take your time finding a good one you should have happy motoring ahead of you - enjoy!

I'd definitely go for a proper Range Rover rather than the Sport which is a Disco 3 in different clothes. Most Sports here seem to be in black and driven by construction company bosses (or were!) and to me look naff. The V8 diesel is a superb engine, V6 is pretty good too.

The 2010 diesel RR will return an official 30mpg (fairly meaningless I know) which is a big difference to the 15mpg of the first Rangie introduced 40 years ago. The next generation will probably be good for 40mpg.

Land Rovers must be the greenest vehicles on the planet (not that I'm biased!):D

Thanks for the friendly and highly informative posts - I'll stick to the RR and might hold out for the 06 model.

Looking to buy in the next few months so I'll have plenty of time to find a nice one.

    Keep you posted.

Why not, specifically? What direct competitors would you choose as an alternative to the RR/RRS? What specifically are you concerned about with these two models?

The same could be said for any larger engine, the OP obviously has the budget, are you privy to some information regarding changes due in the next year or are you just a concerned citizen?

Please provide a link where the EU is hassling LR for their fuel efficiency. I've never come across this.

Again, please provide info regarding this compared to competitors' servicing costs.

I'm not sure what this means in the context of a Motoring forum, please clarify...

This is bordering on direct personal abuse, please be careful with your words. Thanks.

Re: servicing, someone said main dealer is essential. I disagree. There are a few specialists knocking about.

One such is Derek Burton in Wickow. The head mechanic is Cian Mahony. He is a wizard. I'd rather see a specialist service stamp on the book rather than main dealer if the car has a few years on it.

They also sell motors. Check them out.

Also, go find a UK forum and find out what to look for when buying. I used rrsport.co.uk, I'm sure there's an ffrr equiv.

The main drawback you'll expereince when driving such a yoke is the green eyes in disguise. Beware.

    Best of luck. Enjoy.

    K
