It will depend on the departure time.

One thing I can comfortably predict. Pierce st bus gate will not work in rush hour next Monday. Either taxis or busses need to go. The new layout is a complete disaster.

I have often wondered has the Pearse St bus gate ever operated properly. It should really be three lanes but instead has been made into an on street car park for the Gardai.

    Launched! https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2017/1209/926142-luas/
The new Luas Cross City service has been launched today by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

The extension of the green line from St Stephens Green to Broombridge in Cabra is expected to add up to 10 million passenger journeys to the service.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the new line will regenerate areas of Dublin's north city and suburbs, and link up with the Maynooth line allowing commuters from Kildare to access the Luas.

Mr Varadkar said that given the economy is strong again, the metro north and the M20 motorway between Cork and Limerick are next on the agenda.

College green is a traffic disaster. Even the trams are bunching up.

Ever tried to do shift work and get public transport to work? Not possible in Dublin without getting taxis most of the time!

Fair enough, but the city is full of car parks they could park in. They don't NEED parking on one of the major arteries of the city and the paths and traffic islands in the vicinity too.

Why should they pay for parking to go to work when there is no alternative option? Also, just add, there is no real need for 3 lanes through there as it is public transport only. The real issue with pearse street is actually tara street and cars trying to turn left onto the quays. Due to people trying to merge into the left hand lane, traffic in all lanes gets blocked up.

Yeah like many people I have, amazingly the state did'nt say "there ye go pal, just pull up in front of the office" as they took a lane away from a major arterial route for my benefit

    Weird eh?

If you worked for an essential public service, they probably would have, amazingly enough!

JUSt took the Luas to broombridge. 25 mins from SSG. Fairly smooth except for traffic lights along the route.

A fairly large cohort whom got on at SSG and got off at O’Connell street. Hard to say whether this will be the use case for a large amount of people or whether it’s just the day that’s in it.

Nah they wouldn't. Only the gardai get to swing that sort of favour from politicians

You have a fire station on the same street (an actual essential public service as opposed to the lollipop lady depot) that doesn't have lads rocking up and dumping their cars outside like kojack.

Maybe ask them how the manage shift work, the brigade are clever resourceful lads :)

They don't because they have their own car park ;)

Deadly serious. Gardaí are assigned to their place of work. Those placed in the city centre cannot live in their own area and work irregular hours, providing an essential public service. The shift patterns that are there are not conducive to using public transport, based on the fact that transport planners in Dublin seem to think that everyone works 9-5 and only socialise on a Saturday and Sunday. With the crappy wages AGS are paid, why should they have to pay for parking when there is no viable alternative?

Plenty of people are paid as much or worse than the Gardai, work shift work, aren't provided with free parking and still aren't allowed park illegally. I'm a big fan of the guards, I know they've have their trials and tribulations lately but I know the work they do is hard and underappreciated. But none of that counters the fact that this is an abuse of power that isn't tolerated from others.

Is there a salary level below which free parking becomes available ?

Average garda wages are €1322 a week. This is the highest in the public service. It is 42% higher than the public service average, and 85% higher than the average worker (public and private).

Couldn't help myself either. This shows what I was talking about - how you could convey the different routings on the green line by separating it into a green and a blue line. It could be designated Green 1 and Green 2 or anything else either. Doesn't show all stops obviously. Based on information in post #3662

Garda parking is disrupting traffic into Townsend street from fleet St and D olier street.
Two lanes are forming where the luas now blocks the cross section from Hawkins St.
Two lanes have to try and mearge after running the gaunlet already.
Garda parked outside thier garage . Most of the time double parked on double yellows. Tis a joke what they are at.

Took the Luas from SSG to Broombridge. The service was busy. Many from Sandyford line stayed on the tram and got off at Dawson, Westmoreland and O' Connell street. That could be a trend that could develop.

The only significant delay was at Pearce St. bus gate; a bus driver blocked the yellow box and the tram missed the signal to go.

There was a group of young women who got on at Cabra and got off at SSG. It will great service for those frequenting the Harcourt Street nightspots. In the past they may have taken a taxi for that trip.

I was impressed with the service and it should be a great success. However, Dublin Bus and taxis could lose out.

Saw a lot of people walking up from the Cabra station as I was passing earlier - all carrying a lot of Christmas shopping, lots of families with kids obviously in town for the afternoon.

Perfect time of year to launch this kind of thing, from a passenger perspective.

Nobody is going to lose out imo. New infrastructure like this will create new demand. eg people going across the city as opposed to just going to the city centre.

They get an approximately €4,000 tax-free payment towards rent. They could easily live near their station (while still living in a different garda district), so driving isn't essential. However, the main problem is gardaí delaying the 25 million public transport users that pass Pearse Street Station every year for their own selfish benefit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,641 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

Are Gards somehow incapable of carpooling to Pearse Street?

They can't even park legally in Phoenix Park, where there are copious amounts of free spaces that just so happen to be slightly further away to walk.

Have heard but un confirmed reports that 21 minutes was possible to SSG yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,196 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

And with opening of the line there isn't a single public transport project of any significance under construction anywhere in the state. Bit depressing really.
